What are the tipping rules anda go by? (Mainly directed at US citizens)

The ones Ive heard around the most in California are:

-Tip the tax atau double tax

and

-Tip 10-20% of how much anda spent

Typically I do the 10-20%. Its also the one I hear the most.

I think I usually pay above 20% just to be safe, but I honestly like giving big tips so it's not an issue for me

Funny story: A kid I know accidentally tipped his server like 300% when he was younger because he didn't really understand what tipping percentages were. His parents gave him a 20 dollar bill to pay for a 5 dollar meal and he just gave the entire bill to the server and left.
