Ah, but if anda go to JKR's web site, she does answer that question. No, Severus was not there before Lily and James were murdered.

They didn't "butcher" it, they just tweaked it. The same tweakingthey did with all the rest of the movies.

dragonsmemory, in my opinion, they butchered it. They didn't just "tweak" it. They added shit that was really not necesary, and left out things that would have explained things lebih clearly to fan who haven't read the books.
