Poland ALREADY had the strictest abortion laws in Europe. Abortion was only allowed in very limited circumstances, and it was rare to get an abortion even in cases of rape, bc rape is very difficult to prove under Polish law. What's more, there was a "conscience clause" which meant that doctors could deny a patient any treatment if it's against their conscience or beliefs. Some doctors went as far as not telling women about foetal defects until it was too late to terminate pregnancy.

In 2019, only 1100 legal abortions took place in Poland, a country populated by 38 million ppl. 98% of those abortions occurred due to foetal defects.

This ruling effectively makes abortion illegal. Polish women will be forced to give birth to children with zero chance of survival, eg. foetuses with link (where most of the brain is missing). Or, they will have no choice but to undertake unsafe, illegal abortions, endangering their lives. Either way, they will be tortured physically and mentally.

It scares me that conservatives elsewhere want to restrict abortion rights too. Eg. Trump's pick for the Supreme Court (Amy Coney Barrett) would love to overturn Roe v Wade.

Good news! On the same day this news broke, the US linkan anti-abortion declaration with Poland. Other illustrious signatories include Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bahrain, Egypt, Uganda, Libya - in fact many of them are among the the 20 worst countries to be a woman.
