Holy Hephaestus, we're in for one amazing story. I think we all picked up on the curse in the book description, and ever since there has been discussion all over the place about which curse it might be. Is it old? Is it new? Has Hades' curse of the Oracle come back atau did Hera decieve Percy at the end of The Last Olympian? There are answers, my friends, about several curses and about the people who do the cursing.
First we are going to start with Hera. Hera cursed Annabeth in the Battle of the Labyrinth. It was a constant annoyance to Annabeth because Hera just kept getting in her way. We all thought it was over, though, because Hera told Percy that she would spare him and the girl. The pertanyaan is, was she talking about Annabeth atau Thalia. thalia at that point was stuck under a fallen statue that Hera had toppled over trying to get Annabeth. If this curse is the right one it would work for a small part of the story, but there are things that are still left unexplained, so I'm of the opinion that this isn't the right one.
Next. There is a story about a girl who was gifted and cursed oleh Apollo. She was gifted to see the future and the past, but she was cursed because no one would ever believe her prophecies. This curse lead to the Trojan war, the events that occured when the Trojans accepted the Trojan Horse, the death of Agememnon, and eventually the death of the seer, Cassandra, herself. Is it possible that another god cursed one of the demigods because they refused their advances atau gifts like in the story of Cassandra and Apollo? Well, I don't think so, I mean it's possible, but its not the right type of curse. Curses of a god on a demigod atau a mortal in this form and the one above are very person specific. If it was this type it would only affect the camp as a whole in a very minimal way. So, I'm ruling this one out, too.
selanjutnya up we'll discuss the Erinyes. That is to say, the Kindly Ones who aren't very kind. anda know who I'm talking about? What? anda don't? Well go research the Furies, I'll wait......Ok, now these spirits were beasts of pestilence and vengance. If anda crossed one of them atau anda commited a crime they would come on cepat, swift wings to take anda down. Now, I know anda are wondering how this is related to the topic, but let me say this: the Furies were often looked upon as a curse. There is a possibility that the Erinyes are exacting revenge on Camp Half-Blood atau some of the demigods for a transgression against another living being, whether they be mortal atau immortal. The only thing about this idea, is that the Furies are connected to the selanjutnya section, and the theories in the selanjutnya section seem lebih likely than anything else I've seen.
So, this is where it's going to get a little lebih in depth. This is the section I referred to in the above mentioned theory/information thing. The last series had a lot to do with oaths and I don't see why this one should be so different. This theory directly pertains to broken oaths from PJO. There were plenty of broken oaths as we know: The Oath of the Big Three, Luke's oath to Annabeth, and of course, Percy vowing to protect Bianca in the Titan's Curse. There was also a new oath made at the end of the Last Olympian. I'd like to include that R.R. was asked about the punishment for gods when they broke an oath he answered that "the doom, the curse" fell to their demigod children. So, I'm going to explore the possibility that the curse is the product of one of the aforementioned broken oaths. I think, though, that we should go over the daftar of Immortals often associated with oaths, both broken and fufilled.
Horkos (Horkus, Horcus) was the god and personification of Oaths. He was the punisher of those who did not keep their oaths. He is an underworls god, and also a companion of Hecate. It was berkata that the Furies attended his birth. It is also berkata to avoid doing business atau making deals on the fifth hari of the bulan because it was the hari that Horkos was born and it was cursed oleh the Furies. There is a story about an oath that was broken in which Horkos exacted punishment. It was one of Aesop's fables. The story goes that a man had taken a deposit from his friend but decided to keep it for himself. When the friend realized that his money was gone he called for the Man to take an oath that he hadn't taken it. The Man, then realizing that he was in danger, left the city to hide out on his farm. On the way out of the city he ran into an old man bent double over a cane. The Man asked the older man who he was and where he was going. The old man replied that he was Horkos, god of oaths, and that he was tracking down people who swore false oaths to punish them. The Man then asked Horkos how often he revisited each city on his search. The god replied that he came back after forty years atau sometimes thirty. Feeling that he wouldn't be punished, the Man went back to town the selanjutnya hari and swore an oath that he hadn't taken the money. He left the city happy with himself, but again ran into Horkos. The god dragged the man to the edge of a cliff and before he was thrown down they conversed. The Man asked Horkos why he had come back when he berkata it would be thirty years before he'd return. The god berkata "You also need to know that if somebody intends to provoke me, I am accustomed to come back again the very same day." Thus the man was thrown from the cliff as punishment for his falsehood.
Dike was the Goddess of justice and is berkata to have punished all those who swore false oaths. She has been known to curse entire cities to punish the actions of one citizen. With her punishments she brought bad luck, war, and other bad things. Also, the desendants of anyone cursed oleh Dike were cursed until a time when ammends could be made and the Goddess was appeased.
Ate was the Goddess of ruin and the personification of it. She was commonly reffered to as a curse because she would bring ruin to anything and everything in her path. The most notable myth about her is the one that explains her inclusion in this section. It is berkata that on the hari that Heracles was to be born Ate clouded the mind of Zeus and made him swear an oath that the child born of his blood line that hari would rule the people around him, including another of Zeus' desendants. Zeus specifically meant Heracles, but Ate also clouded Hera's mind, enraging the queen of the Olympus. Hera, jealous at Zeus' infedelity and also provoked oleh his claims, cursed Alcmene, Heracles' mother. Hera crossed her arms and legs creating a barrier to keep Heracles inside his mother. She then went to the halaman awal of Sthenelus, son of Perseus, and his wife Nicippe. Nicippe was 7 months pregnant when Hera arrived, but Hera hastened the pregnancy and held back the labor pains allowing Eurystheus, great grand-son of Zeus, to be born. Hera kept Heracles in his mother's womb for another week before releasing him. Hera's actions directly resulted in Eurystheus recieving the destiny meant for Heracles. Zeus knew that Ate was to blame and snatched the goddess up. He hurled her into the underworls and effectively banned her from Olympus.
Styx was the goddess of Hate and the river of the same name. Because of her aid in the first war against the Titans, Zeus gave Styx a position of high honor. Whenever a god would swear an oath a council would be called and Styx would bring a goblet full of the water from her river to Olympus. The swearer would then drink the water and thus swear on the river Styx. It is sometimes berkata that if an oath sworn on Styx is broken that she is the one that punishes the violator.
Erinyes, yep that's right the Furies are here, too. In some myths the furies are sent either oleh Zeus atau Horkus to punish people who break their oaths.
Now, we've been through the daftar of possible punishers, so let's get to the good stuff. I'm going to give anda the two oaths with the best chance of being the cause of the curse.
First off, the Oath of the Big Three. We all know that Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon all took an oath not to have anymore demigods because of their power and because of the Great Prophecy. We also know that they weren't good at keeping their promise because Zeus had Thalia, Hades made Bianca and Nico, and Poseidon fathered Percy. I'm also sure that there are lebih Big Three demigods running around. So, this oath breaking would result in a curse that would seemingly effect everyone, but would it have everyone scared? No, it would only scare Big Three demigods and those closest to them. It seems that everyone at camp is freaking out, so I can safely assume that this isn't the curse to which they attribute Percy's disappearance. Plus, this curse shouldn't affect Piper's dad, but it is clear that he is affected. So, unless Mr. Piper is a Big Three demigod ,which I doubt, I am ruling this one out.
The last oath is the major one, the one we were around for. I'm talking about the oath at the end of The Last Olympian. The Olympians took an oath that all peaceful Titan-kind would be released, all the minor gods would henceforth be recognized and recieve cabins at Camp Half-Blood, and all demigods would be claimed oleh their 12 birthday and sent to camp. Now, could the gods really keep this oath? I don't think they've kept their word. I don't think they forgot cabins because as of the beginning of The lost Hero, R.R. insinuated that the cabins aren't all complete, but he did say that Hecate's children are there. Did they forget to release the peaceful Titans? No, R.R. sort of gave it away that Calypso was no longer on her island. That leaves the claiming of the demigods. This is the most possible because we've met at least two demigods at the start of the lost Hero who don't know that they are demigods and are not at camp. Plus, these two (Leo and Piper) are both around 15 atau 16 years old. If the gods have broken this part of the oath, this would affect all of the demigods because it was up to every god, minor gods included, to claim their children. So, I've just got a feeling that this is the right broken oath and cause of the curse.
