Floating all around Sandman were his brothers, friends, and fellow leaders. He barely could keep his eyes open, seeing their sleepy looks and smelling from every passage the kue, cookie and susu that waited if any of them woke up.
But Sandman had a job to do. As the only one of his people who could stay awake long enough to be a ruler, it was his job to make sure they were taken care of.
Then he could sleep again.
Knocking on the door were what he could only assume were humans. No one else would be so stupid as to do something that could potentially awaken a large group of sleeping somni.
Sandman bowed to a Nagi guarding the door, but almost fell down from exhaustion. The Nagi picked him up and answered the door, whispering something that probably meant What do anda want? There are a bunch of sleeping people here but sounded lebih like, HISS-HISS-SSSSS-HISS-SSSSSS!
“Hello to you, too?” berkata a boy in a white kemeja to the Nagi.
“Hey. Hi….” berkata Sandman, his eyelids dangerously close to closing. “Welcome… to Caeles… Kingdom of the Stars…” he yawned greatly.
The boy yawned also. “I’m Elijah. I got here after I found a rainbow…”
Sandman frowned. “Well,” he said. “What do anda need us to do?”
“I was kind of wondering if there’s a hotel here, atau something,” Elijah said. “I have no idea how to get back to my house.”
“Just… follow me,” berkata Sandman, who dozed off, but looked as though he was going somewhere.
The Nagi guarding the door looked at Elijah strangely. Elijah had never like snakes, so he just followed the floating man.
A large staircase inlaid with patterns of stars and moons that seemed to glow and a large skylight that revealed so many nebulae that the kid had never seen in the crowded city he was from was on the path of the floating guy.
Elijah rather wished he could fly, also. The stairs were a pain, especially since he had just walked an entire pelangi bridge to get here. I had a dream like this once, he berkata to himself.
Sandman finally bumped into a door. Choosing to settle down instead of find his way back to the living room awake, he started to drift gently above the ground, snoring.
Elijah decided to open it. After all, what was the point of watching some weird guy sleeping while levitating?
The door pushed open easily, and behind it, Elijah found an expansive takhta room. One-third of it was taken up oleh a large hamster trail seemingly big enough to hold a 6’5” adult and another third oleh a kitchen, and the last was where a takhta would have been; only it was replaced oleh a pool and big wheel.
There was a person on that wheel.
He barely noticed Elijah. The guy seemed perfectly content just to run on that wheel until he tired, which seemed like it would be never.
Eventually, the guy noticed Elijah, jumped off right in front of him, and beamed a smile.
“Hey!” he said. “I’m Nathaniel, but my friends call me Nate atau Sir. I’m the Fingunt Rex of this place, whatever that means.”
“I’m…Elijah,” he responded, staring at the hamster trail.
Nate apparently took notice of it. “Oh, that?” he asked. “That’s my crawly-doo-dad. I asked the bintang Princes to actually put caffeine in the cokelat and the soda they make me, so I get hyper sometimes. And it’s the only way to stay awake and thin around here. Those somni yawns are infectious.”
“Yeah…” responded Elijah. “Anyway, I was directed up here oleh a guy that floats and was apparently really sleepy-”
“Somni,” Nate corrected.
“Right; somni, and he said, y’know, before he turned into an antigravity vegetable, that you’d find someplace I could stay, because I’m stranded here.”
Nate ravenously tore through a cokelat bunny that seemingly came from mid air. “Hmn?” he asked, his mouth full. “Sure. We have a guest wing. Just don’t wake anyone up.”
“Wait,” Elijah started. “Where’d anda get the bunny?”
Nate pointed to the kitchen. “Beetlegeuse,” he called. “Can I have another bunny?”
A form that Elijah assumed was Beetlegeuse poked his head out. “The head chef is just now returning from Sirius, King,” he said. “Just a bit longer.”
Nate frowned, and jumped into his swimming pool. “That last one was good…”
“Hey,” Elijah called. “Where do I sleep?”
Nate poked his head out of the water. “Well, the guest’s wing is to the left of this room,” he said. “Just choose a room from there.”
Elijah left the room and went left. He found many rooms, all of them with beautiful tampilan of the stars (he could swear he saw the interstellar chef from the window of one of them), but the room that stood out the most was outfitted with a crenellated balcony and a dictionary of every language imaginable.
And even framed pictures of his favourite letters; Koph, lamedh, yodh, all lined up in a row.
Elijah was sure that it was some sort of logo, atau acronym, but it still stood that those were his favourite letters.
