Just in time for Halloween Supernatural returns for its 10th Season.I almost can not even believe that it has been almost a decade since I first rode shotgun with the Winchesters as they went on the hunt for the "Yellow Eyed" Demon.Going back now to my Season 1 DVD box set it strikes me just how fresh faced Jared and Jensen were before the ravages of hunting took their toll. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the show Supernatural there is my brief overview below the Jeremy Carver interview video and article. For those who are familiar then you will know exactly why this show has lasted 10 great years and there is still a hunger for far more Winchester action.
The tag line "Scary Just Got Sexy" really did not convey the show accurately, it should have been more like "Scary Just Got Freaking Awesome!"The show is not about two "dudes" male modelling their way through the underworld. The show is action packed, full of movie and geek references, tongue in cheek, yet tense and dramatic when it needs to be.Each Season has a overall arc that begins with episode One and concludes usually over the course of the final three. Between main arc episodes the show gives us fans some truly inspired stand alone stories. All fans love the grand main threads, be it stopping Lilith, trying to break a cross roads deal, defeat Lucifer, beat Dick or closing the gates of hell. However the greatest thing about the show is how entertaining the seasons are because of the shows ability not to take itself seriously. Episodes such as "Changing Channels", "Mystery Spot", "The French Mistake", "Monster Movie", "Ghostfacers" and "Fallen Idols" (
Paris Hilton guest stars, yeah you read that correctly...Paris Hilton, like totally guest stars y\'all
), just to name a few, are just a few great non arc related "entry" episodes to think about checking out for a taste of the shows meta humour.
Then again you have episodes such as "The Man Who Would be King", "The Man Who Knew too Much", "Good God Y\'All" and "The End" that will have you on the edge of your seats with suspense.
If you are a fan of movies and music then Supernatural has an awesome soundtrack of classic rock, all on cassette tapes of course, to accompany every episode.
It is not hard to make a drinking game out of every time they make a film reference, hell one episode is called "Mannequin 3: The Reckoning", then there\'s "Live Free or Twihard", "Weekend at Bobby\'s" and "My Heart Will Go On"!
Supernatural\'s success can be attributed to one thing and that is the talent involved. The casting of the show is always spot on. No other two actors could do what Jared and Jensen do and what they bring to the roles. Their ability to switch from serious to hilarious as quickly as the show demands is something not a lot of actors have the charm and charisma for. Even before the show made it to its second episode the two actors were born to play brothers.
Misha Collins as Castiel is one of the funniest straight men I can remember seeing in a show, not to mention that Castiel is also seriously kick-ass!
Actors such as Mark Sheppard, Richard Speight Jr and Sebastian Roche turned what could have been simple here today gone tomorrow characters into fan favourites with demands for more appearances. Crowley, a Demon cropping up in Season 5, episode 10 was instantly a major part of the show. thanks to Mark\'s brilliant portrayal and the efforts of the writers.
That is the other side of the talent that makes Supernatural what it is.The writing for the show is at the top of its game. Myth and Lore is actually researched and the writers do not just pluck monsters and scary things out of thin air or lazily just reuse someone else\'s incarnation/version of let\'s say Vampires, Ghouls, Shifters etc. The writers utilise thousands of years of religion, folklore, myths, legends, ancient civilisations belief systems and even classic literature to make everything click.Season 7 in my opinion was the show at its weakest, I liked the base premise of the Leviathan arc, but felt the execution was a bit, not so much lack lustre, more just too safe for Supernatural. It didn\'t feel like it had that sharpness or pace. Each Episode not related to Dick Roman\'s (
) master plan was pretty lazy in explaining why no one was getting Dick that week. Most would start with a brief phone conversation like this...
"Well let me know if you find anything on Dick?"or"Let me know if anything Dick related comes up!"
That said though Season 7, episode 1 "Meet the New Boss" was a solid opening episode. Then "Season 7, Time for a Wedding" was another great comedic story, with the returning obsessive fangirl Becky Rosen (
) and "Party on Garth" with its Grudge inspired antagonist was one of the creepier stories, yet also really funny. So Season 7 is more just "weaker" than the rest based on the shows high standards, not a complete wuss. With Seasons 8 and 9 the show has risen to the challenge of its rivals (
) and seeing how Season 9 left off, well s10:ep1 is possibly going to be one of the best Season premier episodes to date!
) brought us one of the greatest fanboy TV series of all time. Jump into Dean\'s baby, the 1967 Chevy Impala, and hit the highway to hell! Upon their Mother\'s death Sam and Dean/Dean and Sam (see just covering my back there before Dean fans say "no it\'s Dean and Sam" and Sam fans say "well it is actually Sam and Dean in all the scripts") are raised by their Father John (
) into the family business of saving people and hunting things. Living life on the road with fake credit cards and only motel rooms to call home, the brothers travel across country, mostly under the guise of FBI agents with such cover names as "Special Agents Lennon and McCartney or Spears and Aguilera", to take on the forces of both Heaven and Hell and accidentally kick start an apocalypse while they are at it. With the aide of a renegade Angel known as Castiel and the surly loveable grump Bobby Singer, the Scooby gang will stop at nothing to save the world from Lucifer and the new King of Hell Crowley...well busty Asian Babes and Pie may slow Dean down from time to time in their quest. Along the way they encounter Angels, Demons, Demi-Gods, Shifters, Ghouls, Skin Walkers, Vampires, Leviathan, Ghosts, Wendigo, Archangels, Profits of the Lord, Tricksters and even Ghost...Ghostfacers!!!
) as Dean Winchester...sorry fellas it\'s not my fault you were in those films.
Austin Basis and A.J. Buckley as Kenny Spruce and Ed Zeddmore aka "The Ghostfacers".
Kurt Fuller as Zachariah.Kim Rhodes as Sheriff Jody Mills.
Ty Olsson as Benny.Curtis Armstrong as Metatron.Rob Benedict as Chuck Shurley.
Unfortunately UK fans have been duped, with Sky no longer showing the show on Sky Living, or any other channel since the climax of Series 8 (after orginally being shown on ITV2 - series 1-6, I think). So while news of series 10 is awesome, with very few shows these days reaching that milestone (Smallville, Stargate SG1), UK fans will have to wait for the series to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray.
Agreed! I think Sky Living picked it up for season 6 and even then they were 1 year behind the US and that was a joke!!!
UK fans must protest and demand that a channel pick it up and show it at least a max of 3-6 months behind the states!
Supernatural is such an amazing show that it deserves to be aired properly! I know the viewing figures are not as big as other shows, but the loyalty of fans stands out! Also it never suffered from any of the cliched follow up season tropes like 24, Lost and possibly Arrow season 3 fall folly to. I love Arrow just hope they do not upscale for the sake of it and keep it real! Word!
