If your mother is like Victoria, then there is always the chance that you could have an amazing relationship in the future.
If you lose her then you cant do anything, she is gone and you are on your own.......on the other case she may be a bitch and you may suffer but there is always the chance to turn things around....
Which one would I rather have? I don't know if I can even answer that.
On one hand, I completely agree with you all^. However, when you're growing up, you're shaping who you are going to be for the rest of your life. Having a Mom love and support you (even if it's not even for your whole childhood) can really positively effect who you become as a human being. Having a Mom that ignored you for most of your childhood would have a negative effect on you. Just because your Mom all of a sudden started to care for you, (and in Brooke's case AFTER she found happiness) it doesn't change or erase what happened growing up.
But it's not a simple answer.
If you look at Brooke's character and Peyton's character... Brooke has ALWAYS questioned people's love for her and is so surprised when they care about her. While Peyton has had many dark days, she never really seemed to me to be someone that questioned why someone would love her. Brooke has said over and over on the show that she never felt worthy of Lucas's love, she's had so many times when she was surprised Peyton and Haley would do amazing things for her b/c she didn't understand why, she told Chase she wasn't good enough (good enough...smart enough...pretty enough...), she questioned how Julian could love her and pushed him away...etc.
And even her behavior in high school... she acted as the "bad girl" in order to get the attention she never got at home. She slept around so she could feel like at least someone wanted her and so she could feel some sort of affection. She had to teach herself discipline and morals... and what she couldn't teach herself, she learned from her friends.
While Brooke has had her strong moments... she has spent so much of the show having low self esteem and being so fragile and broken... and I think it's pretty clear it's because she was completely ignored by her parents for most of her life.
But ultimately... death is always worse in my opinion. And while Brooke's absentee parents impacted her outlook on life and her view of her self worth, Peyton's mother's death definitely impacted her outlook on life considering she had major abandonment issues and was constantly felt as though everyone was leaving her and would leave her.
