Rohan Here's why: For those of anda who have read the books, anda know a little bit about the history of Rohan, so anda will know my direction here. Gondor was decaying, falling apart and dying from the inside out. As Mordor's influence returned and grew, Gondor lacked strong leaders, their kings fading into memory, and the stewards losing touch of the Numenorian traditions. While the men of Rohan are not from Numenor, they came to the call when they where needed most. Remember, Rohan has no formal military. Every man is raised on horseback, learns war from childhood...because the country has a very small military, the people are their own defense...but oath-bound to come to the Marshal's calls when war is declared. This makes Rohan's people possess something Gondor's did not: the jantung of volunteers. There is nothing stronger than that. So when Rohan was badly crippled after the Battle of the Hornburg, they still rallied, and knowing that the battle to come would be greatly against them, they went anyway. Gondor did not, and likely wouldn't have come to Rohan's aid...had it the resources to do so. Selfishness infected Gondor, whereas it didn't infect Rohan. It's people, it's heart, and ultimately it's honor...is what makes Rohan the better nation. 6,000 horse + 4000 foot (Dor-en-Ernil, Lossanarch) facing a horde in the hundreds of thousands...a matter of courage, strengthened oleh unquestionable honor. When I read books, I look heavily at the historical sides of them. Tolkien couldn't write worth a damn, but dammit he made true LORE.
