I think he was actually very smart, especially academically. He did fix the Vanishing Cabinet entirely by himself, after all.

I've always imagined Draco being a top student - and not only in Slytherin.

As someone said before, he fixed the Vanishing Cabinet. He's also eager to learn new stuff, even if these are the Dark Arts.

I don't think he is smart enough for Ravenclaw, and as Gryffindor would be the least...

I always thought him as being smart not neraly enough to equal Hermione though.

I think he has enough courage to be in Gryffindor because he stood up to do the right thing in the Half Blood Prince, when he lowered his wand on Dumbeldore.
