If the love story is written and performed well then I really enjoy (like in any TV show/movie) but my only problem is that the whole companion falling in love with the doctor is getting a bit old

And then. I just don't like romance, in my media to begin with? By which I mean cis heterosexual romance. Because it is literally all we get.

Not to mention I just read the Doctor as asexual, and New Who has trampled (and thus trampled on him as a character to a degree, to be honest) all over that in a (read: MOFFAT'S ENTIRE RUN) really gross way.
