I've never liked the idea of having to own a certain amount of merchandise, or going to all the parks, or knowing a movie off by heart, just to be classified as a "true" fan. Not everyone has the same opportunities. And people can love something and still be critical of it.

well yeah, words have meanings, so a true disney fan probably isn't someone who is constantly ragging on the movies and characters. but i think a lot of what makes someone a "true" fan of anything is up for debate - owning merch, participating in fandom, etc.
