We know for sure that as evil as souless spike was he retained much of his core personality post-vamped, which we all know he was a sensitive and sentimental man who had a strong bond with his mother and was very passionate. Good or evil, Spike was always a devoted partner to the women he loved. So I believe seeing all that in him while he was souless and falling for Buffy is more admirable. I believed he worked harder for Buffy cause he had to and that was who he was; a lover. Angel didn't have to. Spike had the disadvantage of meeting Buffy first as an evil souless thing.
