Is Almost Here — 14 Things You Should Know Before You Listen
It’s been years and years and years, but the moment has almost arrived.
On Nov. 20, Adele will finally release her third album,
The singer hasn’t released a new album since 2011’s Grammy-winning effort,
and fans have been waiting for her return, and, not surprisingly, she came back with a bang. The singer released her record-breaking single “Hello,” and picked up exactly where she left off: on top.
So what can we expect from this album which is sure to leave us an emotional wreck? Here are 14 things we know about it.
, Adele isn’t looking to be shedding tears for her ex-boyfriend. Instead, she’s shedding tears for her past and everything she “ever did and never did.” She’s calling this album a “make-up record” since she is “making up with myself” and “making up for lost time.”
again because she doesn’t feel the same emotions, and “it ain’t worth feeling like that again.” But she also realizes that her last album was a “phenomena” and she can’t “include it in any expectations of anything I ever do again.”
And that is her 3-year-old son, Angelo. Adele decided to return because she wanted her son to see his mom “running a proper business. Being a boss again. Hopefully smashing it again.” Seems like she will get her wish.
When you’re one of the best, you get the best, and that’s exactly who Adele enlisted to help her produce and co-write this album. She teamed up with Ryan Tedder (“Rumour Has It”), Greg Kurstin (“Hello”), Max Martin, Bruno Mars and probably the most unexpected collaboration, Danger Mouse.
It’s no secret that Adele took her time making this album, but she took a considerable amount of time finishing off her first single, “Hello.” She and co-writer/producer Kurstin knocked out the verses first, but six months passed before they came back to the chorus.
Adele is trading in the heartbreak to sing about sex on the track, “I Miss You,” which she described as being about “arguing, one of the most intimate moments in my life.”
Adele teamed up with Bruno on the album for the track “All I Ask” and said that the “Uptown Funk” singer definitely pushed her vocals to the max, saying she “never sung so hard in me whole life.”
Adele teamed up once again with Kurstin for the track “Million Years Ago: which has her singing about missing her mother, her friends and when “life was a party to be thrown.” Adele said that the song made it to
“at the last minute” and that it is “very stripped-back” and will remind people of
The second song to be released from her album, “When We Were Young,” which was co-written by Tobias Jesso Jr., has Adele traveling to the future and pretending she’s 50 at a house party with her former friends.
“It was based on us being older, and being at a party at this house, and seeing everyone that you’ve ever fallen out with, everyone that you’ve ever loved, everyone that you’ve never loved, and stuff like that, where you can’t find the time to be in each other lives,” Adele told Sirius XM. “And you’re all thrown together at this party when you’re like 50, and it doesn’t matter and you have so much fun and you feel like you’re 15 again. So that’s the vibe of it really.”
It may be a make-up record, but Adele’s got one more “f–k you” to that ex-boyfriend who inspired
“It sounds obvious, but I think you only learn to love again when you fall in love again. I’m in that place,” she told
. “My love is deep and true with my man, and that puts me in a position where I can finally reach out a hand to the ex. Let him know I’m over it.”
She is, too! The singer admitted that she knows she’s written a good song “when I start crying.”
“It’s when I just break out in [expletive] tears in the vocal booth or in the studio, and I’ll need a moment to myself,” she said.
Adele marks the Ryan Tedder-produced “Remedy” as the turning point for
since it restored her confidence. Ryan presented her with the word “remedy” which immediately reminded her of her child, which he said “unlocked the whole lyric,” and the song was “done, written and recorded that day.”
Not only does Adele have a song for her son, but she also penned a track for her boyfriend, Simon Konecki, called “Water Under The Bridge.”
“It was sort of about a relationship suddenly getting really, really serious, and then getting a bit frightened by it, and then realizing that ’I think this must be right,\'” she told
. “This is the relationship that I want to be in for as long as I can possibly be in it.”
She’s hitting notes she’s never hit before.
Adele was forced to get surgery in 2011 to repair a vocal hemorrhage, but as a result, she can now hit four new notes.
“It does make your voice, like, brand-new,” she told
. “Which I actually didn’t like at first, because I used to have a bit of husk to my voice, and that wasn’t there at first.”
