Movie posters can end up being as iconic as the movies they are actually marketing. Who could forget the shark approaching the surface to take out the girl on the Jaws poster, the screaming and helpless female victim on the Psycho poster, the terrifying “Here’s Johnny” face on the poster for The Shining, the lonely astronaut on the Gravity poster and the solitary rose on the American Beauty poster, for a few examples?
It generally takes a great poster to make the grade as one of those used in any given movie’s marketing campaign, as potentially hundreds of artists and graphic designers pitch ideas to studios to have theirs considered for usage – but it isn’t only professional designers who get in on the act when it comes to producing movie posters.
The buzz around movies encourages fans to get in on the act. Any movie you can think of is likely to have posters made for it by everyday people – and they can really produce!
