Television has been quite a reboot-a-palooza in recent years as networks have signed on to bring old shows back for another go, and it can be hard to get too excited about all of them. Now, however, there’s a reboot in the works that could set itself apart from all the others. The classic sci fi series
The Twilight Zone looks to be coming back yet again, but this time with an epic twist: viewers will be able to choose how the episodes unfold.
Digital video company Interlude has finalized a deal with CBS to turn a Twilight Zone reboot into a collaboration combining traditional television with interactive gaming, according to The Wrap. Viewers would be able to step into the narrative and change the course of an episode based on how they feel. The options will allow any who choose to interact to return to the same episode more than once and experience difference results each time. There are no details just yet on how the choose-your-own-adventure format will combine with episodic entertainment, but Interlude should be the perfect company to get the project off the ground.
Interlude specializes in producing video content with choose-your-own-adventure options for altering outcomes, first rising to prominence with the video revival of Bob Dylan’s "Like A Rolling Stone" that allowed viewers to channel surf to see different famous faces lip syncing along with the song. The company also designed a game for MTV to promote new series Scream by letting players try to avoid grisly deaths. The Twilight Zone will be a natural – although admittedly ambitious – extension of what Interlude has achieved so far.
This new project is not the first time that The Twilight Zone has been rebooted. The original series ran for five seasons from 1959 – 1964. The initial reboot ran for three seasons from 1985 – 1989 on CBS, and a third reboot ran for only one season on UPN from 2002 – 2003. The series was even adapted for a feature film in 1983, and Leonardo DiCaprio has been working on a second big screen venture for quite some time. A reboot might not be anything new for The Twilight Zone, but the CBS/Interlude collaboration certainly promises that this series will be unlike any that came before.
If done right, this new Twilight Zone could even equal the greatness of the early years of the first show. The traditional anthology format of the franchise has always meant that there are no real limits on what can happen inside the Twilight Zone, and immersing viewers in the upside-down and inside-out adventures might be fabulous.
Even assuming the project takes off without a hitch for CBS and Interlude, we still have quite a wait ahead of us before we see how the latest Twilight Zone reboot could work with a choose-your-own-adventure format. We\'ll let you know if it moves forward. In the meantime, check out our schedule of summer TV premieres to see what\'s coming up.
