Actress lands female lead role on series adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments”

ABC Family’s “Shadowhunters” has found its Clary Fray in actress Katherine McNamara, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

McNamara joins the previously cast Dominic Sherwood, Roberto Rosende and Emeraude Toubia.

Shadowhunters,” the straight-to-series adaptation of the “Mortal Instruments” series of YA novels by Cassandra Clare, will follow 18-year-old Clary, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace (Sherwood) and her best friend, Simon.

Described as beautiful, creative, and intelligent, Clary Fray is a promising art student whose bright future is derailed when her mother is kidnapped and she learns her life has been a lie. As she is forced into action, she embraces her newfound powers and realizes that she will play the central role in this new world.

“Shadowhunters” is produced by Constantin Film and executive produced by Ed Decter and McG, who will also direct the first episode.

McNamara’s film credits include “New Year’s Eve” and the upcoming “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.” On TV, she most recently starred on MTV’s “Happyland” and will also be seen on the new season of ABC Family’s “The Fosters.” She is represented by CESD and Mosaic.
