Big Hero 6 is a soft robot named Baymax (voiced by Scott Adsit) who takes care of Hiro Hamata (voiced by Ryan Potter). He’s programmed to be a nurse bot who heals and hugs the sick. As New York Comic Con attendees saw at the

panel, Baymax adorably inflates, deflates and gets silly when he’s low on battery.

It’s too bad Baymax isn’t real. However, the robot’s arm is!

After the Comic Con panel, director Don Hall told USA TODAY he and the filmmakers got their inspiration for the lovable Baymax during a research tour of Harvard, MIT and Carnegie Mellon, where they saw “a crude robot arm made of vinyl, and it was inflatable. There was enough there for me to extrapolate a character there,” he said. That “animation-friendly” limb “inspired Baymax and gave him his whole persona as a healthcare robot.”

Hall’s co-director, Chris Williams, insists that everything in the movie is “grounded in science.” That can be a problem when collective science knowledge advances faster than the production of the movie.

For example, telekinesis, which is demonstrated in the movie, “had new developments while the film was in production,” said Williams. There was an experiment that “hooked one person up to a computer and made another person’s finger move involuntarily.”

“Science is moving fast, so you have to work hard to stay ahead of it, if you’re making a movie that uses some of this more fanciful scientific stuff.”
