What were Edward's Reasons for Leaving Bella in New Moon?

This is sort of an informal rant/observation.

We all know that New Moon is about tragedy and the loss of cinta and the aftermath. Edward left Bella. But why did he leave her?

Since New Moon is being adapted into a feature length film, I've been seeing alot of pertanyaan and accusations reguarding Edward's absense.

Examples:
- Jacob's better than Edward because he didn't leave Bella!
- Why would Edward leave Bella if he loved her?
- Edward's scum. When anda cinta someone, anda don't just abandon them and leave them to die!

Despite the fact that I'm Team Edward, I find these accusations to be...

Okay so I was just looking through my pictures, and I found this:

I can't remember where I got it from (possibly edwardandbella.com?) but I just thought it as really interesting.
I mean look how small Alice is, when the book says she's small I didn't think she'd be that much smaller than Bella.
And look how tall Jacob is...hmm maybe he would win in a fight against Edward...maybe not, Edward is good at everything afterall.
So anyway, I just thought it would be useful for people who have trouble picturing the characters heights -like me :).
Tell me what anda think- does it help at all??
