Game of Thrones season 6: Premiere will feature big moment for ‘shaken’ Melisandre 

Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos Seaworth in the HBO fantasy drama, has revealed that the opening episode of the new season will feature some “unpredictable” and “unexpected” stuff.

The 54-year-old told Express.co.uk: “The first episode to kick off with [Mesliandre] – without saying anything again – is astonishing. There’s absolutely amazing stuff coming [up], just so left of field, unexpected.

"And just watching your and my favourite characters being put in these situations, that are just so unpredictable and just so unexpected, it’s one of the trademarks of the show.” 

Liam, who was speaking at a recent press conference in London, said that his character would change following the death of Davos’ master Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane).

Carice van Houten, who plays red priestess Melisandre, was also at the event and hinted too that the opener would be a big one for her character.

Asked if there was anything that stood out for her from season six, the 39-year-old actress said: “Yes, not what you think it is. Something else, funny enough. What you’re fishing for, it’s something else. 

“Yes, there was something that I was like, I knew it was coming at some point. People had talked about it before to me but I wasn’t sure when it was going to happen. This is really vague... it’s in episode one already.”

Her words hint at an existing fan theory that suggests that Melisandre will not be bringing Jon Snow (Kit Harington) back from the dead.

The star even recently quashed rumours that she would be helping to resurrect the fallen Lord Commander of The Night’s Watch.

Carice went on to say that Melisandre’s “whole world is shaken” and that she is “completely confused” at the start of season six by the events from last year.

“What the f*** is happening? She’s been on this mission and all of a sudden it makes no sense and her tricks didn’t work – the sacrifice of this girl didn’t work,” the Dutch-born star explained.

She added: “But I think it’s slowly getting to her that she might have been slightly wrong about things, so that’s where we leave her in season five and that’s definitely where she starts off in season six.”

Reflecting on the sacrifice of Shireen Baratheon (Kerry Ingram), Carice described it as a “really, really cruel scene” and that she was fully aware of the onslaught of abuse she was going to get for the huge plot twist. 

“I was happy that it was going to be such an epic scene but at the same time I was like: ‘Oh my god, this is not going to help me’. All the Joffrey hate is going straight to me now,” she explained.

Carice said she would be forgiven by the Twitterverse if she brought Jon Snow back but it now seems unlikely that this is the case - if the actress’ words hold true. 

Actor Kit has apparently been spotted on set in Belfast and was snapped walking through the city\'s airport last summer as filming commenced.

Nevertheless, Melisandre is set to have a “pivotal role” in season six and will undergo a transformation of sorts. 

Game of Thrones season 6 simulcasts on Sky Atlantic on Monday April 25 at 2am and will be repeated on the same day at 9pm.
