What will Loras Tyrell be up to in Season 6? Finn Jones drops some hints

I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Finn Jones teases what's in store for Loras in Season 6
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
“Season 6 is good man. It’s really good.”
Thus spoke Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell) when grilled by Matt Geary of
GeekPrideTV about what his character will be up to next year on
. Jones and Kristian Nairn (Hodor) both sat for a free-wheeling, low-key interview at the most recent London Film and Comic Con, and while they were understandably cagey about specifics, Jones dropped enough hints to at least inspire a few brainstorms.
To start, Jones had some nice things to say about the much-ballyhooed changes the show made to George R.R. Martin’s
novels during Season 5. It’s clear that Jones has read the books, since he makes direct reference to Loras heading off to Dragonstone on the page. (Nairn’s answer when asked if he’d read the books before being cast: “F*** no.”) As far as Jones is concerned, “no one would care” if Loras went to Dragonstone, and “it makes it more interesting to tie [Loras] in with all the stuff that’s going on in King’s Landing.”
Jones praised the books (it’s pretty obvious he’s passionate about this story), but said that “the TV series needs to stay punchy…it needs to stay relevant to the plot and what’s going on.” That’s an argument that been made before when defending Season 5 from its critics, and one likely to continue as we head into uncharted territory next year.
Speaking of next year, Jones also dropped some vague hints about what Loras will be doing in Season 6, intimating that he’s “happy with where Loras is being taken at the moment.”
There’s a full arc going on…From an actor’s perspective, it’s really good. I got some good stuff to do. There’s a dramatic change, which is great.
Loras was used fairly sparsely in Season 5, and didn’t appear after the sixth episode. It’s interesting to speculate as to what Jones could mean when talks about “a full arc” and “a dramatic change.”
When we last left Loras, he’d been thrown in jail on the orders of the High Sparrow for the crime of buggery, so the first part of his arc will probably deal with him getting out of prison. There are a couple of ways this might happen. In the books, the Tyrells enlist the help of Randyll Tarly, an experienced military commander from the Reach, to lean on the Faith to release Margaery. According to the Season 6 casting calls floating around, Randyll Tarly will very likely appear in Season 6, so we may see him act on behalf of Loras as well, even though Loras isn’t imprisoned alongside his sister on the page.
There’s also the matter of Loras’ upcoming trial. Being a capable warrior, Loras will probably choose a trial by combat, which could open up all kinds of possibilities. Who would the Faith choose as their champion in this scenario, for example?
conspiracy theorists surely have their guesses.
Jones also makes reference to “a dramatic change” for Loras. That’s pretty vague, but could reference something that happens to the character in
. In that book, Loras storms the castle of Dragonstone and routes the men Stannis left to defend it, but is gravely injured in the process. When last we hear of him in
, he’s dying of his wounds. Jones seems pretty dismissive of sending Loras to Dragonstone, but a life-threatening injury isn’t out of the question, especially if a trial by combat is involved.
All in all, Jones gives us plenty to chew on between now and the debut of Season 6. The interview is pretty fun by itself, too, as the actors are relaxed and just talking off-hand. Some of the highlights:
Nairn has done drag, apparently. Someone needs to find footage of his performance.
It’s pretty adorable when Nairn talks about how in awe he was the first time he walked onto the
Nairn’s favorite character on the show (other than his own) is Varys. Jones’ is the Hound.
until December this year, so that’s pretty much my year taken up.” A full arc indeed.
Jones couldn’t help but troll the interviewer a bit when the subject of Jon Snow came up. “He’s dead. He’s dead. Dude, I know he’s dead. I’ve seen Season 6. He’s dead.” But I think he’s just joking. Probably.
will close down roads in the Spanish city of Girona next week in preparation for filming
What are the Kübler-Ross model stages of grief again? Anger, denial, bargaining, depression and...
Last year was Game of Thrones first year filming in Spain. And as we have discovered, they liked...
Have you already read all the books and/or don\'t care about spoilers? You can reveal all the spoilers in the comments with the click of a link below.
Like the actor, not the character so a dramartic change in loras would be welcome! Entitled, spoiled brats are not very endearing and Jones has done a good job portraying that.
correct, that means there was a different change from the show to the book. one that makes him look like an idiot.
I actually like the show character better than the books character.
How did you miss the part at the beginning when asked why The Hound was his favourite character, and he said “Couldn’t tell you”.. This could be a sign that he is back in S6, and has an interesting story, which is why Finn is liking him again.
Seems an odd thing to say your favourite character changes every month, and then he says this months is The Hound, why is a character that died a while ago his choice? Interesting..
Oh, I just figured Jones was joking about not being able to tell the interviewing anything. That’s really intriguing, though. Great catch.
Is there anything in the books or the TV show that indicates the High Sparrow would allow a trial by Combat to supercede his the Church’s judgment?
I don’t recall seeing anything like that.
By the end of A Dance with Dragons, it seems like Cersei’s trial by combat is going to happen, so it’s implied that the High Sparrow is okay with it, although I don’t think there’s official word from him.
I’m not sure he has much of a choice, or if he did, he wouldn’t think to exercise it. Based on how popular trials by combat seem to be, it seems like the practice is deeply rooted in Westerosi society. True, trials given by the Faith operate under different rules, by my guess is that this particular rule bridges the gap.
I would think, intellectually, a trial by combat would be the last thing The High Sparrow would honor as that is a clear vehicle for the rich and powerful to escape justice.
Well, isn’t a trial by combat driven by the Gods? The Gods “decide” who wins, therefore decide who is guilty or not? I feel like with the TV version of Tyrion’s trial by combat that was the general message given by Tywin before the fight? The non-guilty combatant will prevail because that was the Gods’ will?
Be real here, Tywin knew the Mountain would be his champion and that Tyrion didn’t have anyone to be his as Bronn had already been bought off.
Well, its what Tywin & co WANTED to happen and for it to be pinned on Tyrion, not saying that actually is fact. I thought Tywin said something to the effect of “Let the Gods decide”. Then that was the rational behind letting people do a trial by combat in the first place… That it wouldn’t be men deciding their fate, it would be the gods because the gods would make the right person win. Or am I just nuts?
And in that case, I would think High Sparrow would think it was fine. That was my point to begin with! :)
Maybe the Hound recovered from his wounds and converted to the Faith thus setting up the trail by combat.
On the Hound, I would assume that if he IS still alive and fighting for the Faith, it would be because they found him and nursed him back to health. Maybe he fights for them to pay them back, or he became a believer in light of his rescue… Or maybe they’ve twisted his arm in some way.
On the trial-by-combat, yes, they are believed to be decided by the Gods. That’s what everyone believes anyway, and is why they put so much faith in the tradition. Whether that’s true, considering Tyrion lost his trial-by-combat even though he was innocent of the crime in question, or not… probably not. The Seven don’t seem to be real, from what I can tell.
prediction: a mangled terrible depiction of who loras actually is. im imagining he will be a bit walleyed usually holding crayons and drooling. great work d&d im so excited to see what they havve in store!
Interesting perspective…think of something totally ridiculous, then credit that to D & D so you have something to bitch about!
the fact they made loras a complete buffoon is what i was getting at. which he isnt. bad character development. if you wanna see something ridiculous go watch x men origins wolverine when he is fighting deadpool on the top of three mile island. that was benioffs great idea… was like a 6 year old wrote the story in crayon. so yeah hes tapping from the same stupid side of his brain.
loras aside. dorne was d&d’s first chance to put their skills to the test and look how that turned out….
and they picked up the guy who did world war zzzz. the #1 biggest book to movie trashing ever. he fits right in!
Loras was an entitled, spoiled brat in the books and in the show…what did they do to him that was so bad???
he starts out that way yes. but he changes after renly’s death. he changes after blackwater. there is no change on the show, hes just a dude trying to get dudes till he gets caught with a dude the end hes dumb.
Actually there was a change on the show, he didn’t give a crap anymore after Renly’s death…
I really hope Loras’ role in season 6 is as dramatic and his character is given a full arc as stated above.
One of my complaints with GoT’s depiction is that it has not given him the depth the character has in the books. For me it’s not about him going to Dragonstone or the amount of action involved, it’s the character development.
While GoT did show the relationship he had with Renly, and even suggested that Loras was able to manipulate Renly into a bid for the throne. Perhaps the Tyrell’s skill set specializes in manipulation! Loras was shown grieving in Renly’s tent after his death, however his grief is not highlighted in GoT except during the Purple Wedding when the Jousting Dwarves make fun of Renly’s sexuality.
GoT seems to gloss over Loras’ grief, involving him with Olyvar to reveal the Tyrell’s machinations in marrying Sansa to Loras and in revealing his homosexuality and Margaery’s involvement to the High Sparrow. I understand that D&D have to trim dialogue and story arcs to fit the TV show parameters. I just wish they had given more depth to Loras and Renly’s relationship. It came across as rather crass that Loras is just shagging a new guy… after all Renly’s dead right?! In the books, Loras clearly loved and mourns Renly deeply. He becomes a KingsGaurd because he feels Renly was his only true love and the vows will shield him from further romance. I get that in the show he could not be a KingsGaurd because he was betrothed to Cersei, but he could have been appointed after Tywin’s death at Cersei’s hand.
Several other bloggers and I discussed a few weeks ago how Loras’ physical prowess and fighting ability has also been glossed over in the show. We have not seen Loras really fight except in the Tournament of the Hand in Season 1 and against Brienne at Renly’s camp in Season 2. In both of those battles his prowess was limited. He needed assistance from The Hound in the case of The Mountain attacking him after the Joust. And Brienne bested him in Hand to Hand combat. In ASOIF, Loras is often compared to Jaime Lannister in his youth. He is considered a gifted warrior and swordsman, with a certain arrogance and haughty attitude. Loras also becomes an unwitting mentor to Tommen, much to Cersei’s horror.
These are two specific things I think that could have been featured in the show and added depth to his character. Tommen’s affection for Loras led directly to his downfall at Dragonstone. It could have been altered to have led to his downfall at the hands of the High Sparrow and fit with the changes to his story arc. Instead we just received an awkward sympathy speech to Cersei at Tywin’s funeral and several gratuitous love scenes with Olyvar that added very little to his character dynamic. It was not even necessary to developing a “Buggary” charge against him. As Jaime said, “His proclivities were the worst kept secret at court.”
Lol. Looks like your comments got deleted.
He shouldn’t be allowed to besmirch the name Hodor like that!
Yes, they suddenly disappeared as I was about to read them again. Well done wic.net
Who cares! Your comments are offensive all over this board. They should delete yours as well. Athelstan your pointing the finger at the wrong person. Look to Aegun and A57se for the bullying. They are constantly doing it on this blog.
The more you try to defend and deflect your abhorrent behavior, the more you look like an arse. Just saying bro. Is just appologize or drop it if I were you.
You remind me of Ser Cleos Frey, as well spoken as a weasel, with the prose of a goose, and the courage of an especially brave ewe.
What comments?? dang nub it! I had a comment deleted awhile back, I guess when you say fuck more then 7 times it needs moderators so funny!!
Poor Hodor, Hodoring loudly into the void. Let me explain this slowly, Hodor, so that you understand. Some people are smart enough to write down their thoughts more quickly than you. What probably takes her 15 minutes to think of and write would take up all of your free time. I think this is why you’re so angry. What would compulse a person to be such a big Hodor DICK to someone who is innocently expressing themselves themselves is beyond me.
I really enjoy your thoughtful posts and I know I’m not the only one. This latest post is spot on about Loras. Hopefully they show more of his martial prowess and less of his bedroom jousting in season 6.
Practice what you preach Aegun! Your Dickattude is all over this blog in the way you respond to other bloggers.
If as you say, you aren’t really Hodor, are you actually Donald Trump?
You may not have noticed but this IS a blog devoted to ASOIAF and GoT and for those who like to indulge in theorising and speculation about what is going to happen next in the books and TV show then this is the place to do it. It’s harmless fun and you should enter into the spirit of things if you wish to partake.
If you don’t like that or cannot abide those who can construct their own hypothesis, complete with such outlandish concepts as wit, grammar, humour and the ability to come up with an argument out of far more than semi-coherent trolling and made up words (I’m assuming that “Dickattude” (sic)) is indicative of an inability to QC your own typing) then either find another blog more suited to your talents or have a long hard talk with your self before coming back.
Please read and inwardly digest. Any questions? Then I’m here fairly regularly. If you don’t like what I’ve got to say then speak to the people who run wic.net.
Nice post my friend. Well struck indeed.
Thanks. I don’t like trolls or bullies. He was doing the former and trying to do the latter.
I think the bulk of his complaint was about people assuming they would do a better job adapting the books into a tv show then D & D with the way they constantly criticize everything.
He DOES have a point but he could have stated it a lot better.
Apparently I missed the bru-ha-ha. They comments were gone before I had a chance to check them out.
Loras is a good fighter, as depicted by the show. Brienne is almost as tall as the Hound and is almost as strong as the Hound, but Loras did give her a run for her money. He is no slouch. It’s like he was beaten by the same person, and that person was exceptional. Given a different opponent, I think we’d see a different outcome.
Don’t get me wrong, I am Team Brienne. And I am glad she knocked Loras into the dirt! But I just think Loras’ ability as a fighter has been really downplayed.
Loras being burned as in the books, then surviving but being horribly disfigured would be an interesting arc for a character renowned as a pretty boy. It would also make a good basis for bonding between him and the Hound, should their paths cross again. Maybe the writers will send Loras to the Quiet Isle for healing, instead of having Brienne’s PoV introduce us to the Gravedigger.
That’s a really good thought there. I can see it happening–and I’m welcome it, too.
Yes, I could see GRRM doing something like that. It would be like him to indulge in a spot of foreshadowing.
Maybe it’s just me, but I struggle to even remotely like any of the tyrells (in the books and show) except the QOT who is awesome.
Stannis should have went right after the Tyrells when his bannerman came back to him after Renly’s shadow stabbing.
Yeah I’m not a Tyrell fan either. Olenna was a Redwyne… so she is still awesome.
I wish they would stop asking if Jon is dead and switch to the question is Kit Harington off the show
This is my new favorite interview, ever. I’ve always like Finn, I know he’s a HUGE book nerd, and you can tell how he cares by his passionate theory on how it will all shake out.
1. Yes, the Finn on the Hound bit was cagey…at best. CLEGANEBOWL CONFIRMED
2. Jon Snow is dead dead dead dead dead…okay we get it. Now, is Kit Harington back on the show for S6? **crickets**
3. Jon being Rhaegar’s son. Both Nairn and Finn flipped out and looked at someone behind the camera, while also crying “SPOILERS” R+L=J CONFIRMED.
I’m only kidding about some of this.
That won’t stop some from taking this as the Gospel.
The pics of Kristian Nairn in drag have been around for years…
Thanks! He’s looking pretty good there.
Loras would’ve been killed by the Mountain in season one if the Hound hadn’t interfered. I really hope this will come into play, but it’s also a good indicator of why the Hound is his favorite character.
Maybe Loras will be given the option to join the Nightswatch!!!
That would be great to have him become Alliser Thornes new foil!
Ser Alliser would pop his aorta if Loras showed up at the wall!!! :)
With all the talk of the Valonqar prophecy and “is it Tyrion or Jamie?” the idea of Loras filling this role is one that had been waving insistently from the back of my mind for a couple of months now. Loras is, after all a younger brother. I’ve not got much to back this up with other than a notion that he will still be very protective towards Margery after what she’s been through and the Tyrell’s collectively won’t have much love for Cersei.
hmmm, I could see that making sense in the show but obviously not in the books.
There is definitely a theory that states how the Tyrells greatly exaggerate the extent of Loras’ injuries to keep him out of Cercei’s scheming. I can’t remember exactly how it went but it involved the Tyrells commandeering the Queens fleet as well
The Watch, you are correct. Disrespectful, bullying, racial slurs against blacks the Irish, Asians, handicapped, demeaning other bloggers for the way they express themselves, beliefs, or for simply having another opinion. David Razor was quick to defend mild criticism from bloggers on a staff feature, “Please stop bashing us we do a great job”None of the W.i.C staff stop these Trolls from bashing it’s called *Mods*…… Every few days I come here to get the latest news scroll comments…the words a57se, Aegun, bullying, disrespectful are associated with there names. They can’t all be wrong myself included..”I guess you can give all of us an internet hug David Razor”
I noticed many interpretations on the Valonqua prophecies, and I also thought Loras would be a candidate in the books as he has 2 older brothers, whereas he doesn’t on the show.
Yes, the absence of Garlan & Willas Tyrell from the TV show makes Loras a less likely candidate for the Valonqar. I wouldn’t entirely rule him out in the books though. There are several other younger brothers who’ve been discussed as candidates before including The Hound. It’ll be interesting to see how the show and books resolve this.
I agree that a57se and Aegun are the true bullies of this blog. That’s exactly why my friends an I stopped coming here. They seem to be allowed to say as they please and offend others with no consequence on here. I see it hasn’t changed and I’ll be going back to the other blogs. They are the trash of this blog. They have offensive things that should be deleted as well.
Being outspoken about ones opinion and having the gall to disagree with others sometimes alienates one from the Small folk. It happens.
The more I think about this post the more I think that this is Hodor, switching his handle.
or someone else who seemed to have done the same thing in the past.
I too had to take a break from here for a while, Athelstan. a57se used to just infuriate me! Honestly, he has been a little better lately. The Red Lady is always the voice of reason amongst all of us. She is like the den mother WiC. I myself took it too far a compile times in my blog post anger (sorry a57se). The person that went by No One though gets no apologies, they can still screw themselves.
This mother friggen book and show makes us all crazy! I scour the web daily like a GoT crack fiend looking for updates, info, videos I have not seen, theories, all of it……it’s crazy. I watched a friggen YouTube video by CollegeHumor where they made a 16-bit GoT video game spoof (pretty funny). That’s how desperate for this shit I am. Friggen end of April/May is so far away it is ridiculous.
A57SE, do you know what the book stores are going to look like when WoW comes out? How about the web traffic on Amazon, Barnes and Noble? It is going to be friggen epic! I cannot wait for Winds of Winter…… If it comes out before the show are you going to read first or wait for show?
No OCD, just GoT. Passion….I’ll go with that
Thank you. I never thought I would be called a den mom, but I’m glad to accept the warm and fuzziess.
Wow, you went from floozie to den mom in a couple weeks!!!
Brett Baratheon this is hilarious!! Don’t worry.. you’ll be trolling a57se again soon!!LOL!
There you are Cynthia, was wondering what happened to you. Nope, Ive decided I am not going to get upset in the WiC comment section anymore. Life is too short and Game of Thrones only comes once a year. Jump on the wagon with me, Cyn, let’s not get angry together.
“As far as Jones is concerned, “no one would care” if Loras went to Dragonstone, and “it makes it more interesting to tie [Loras] in with all the stuff that’s going on in King’s Landing.””
I would care to see Loras do something that isn’t linked in anyway to him being gay…
In the books, after Renly’s death, he mourns him, and went on with his life, in which “being gay” isn’t the sole definining attribute.
He joins the kingsguard, he tries to teach Tommen to joust&fight to make him a knight (which cause frictions with Cersei), he then goes to try & free dragonstone…
No, people wouldn’t care specifically about him going to Dragonstone. But I’m sure they’d care about him doing SOMETHING that isn’t only about his sexual orientation.
Even Ros, the prostitute, had, in the end, things to do that weren’t about sex. She was a spy/informer, she tried – and failed – to raise higher…
Loras character is even more sex-based than 2 prostitutes. Kinda ridiculous.
I can also quite imagine that gay people watching the show would’ve liked to have a “knightly Loras” as a great gay character with a personality ( arrogant, but overall a brave and decent guy ) over a gay who… is just gay. Does nothing else.
I don’t blame the show for not doing anymore with Loras at all.
He did change after Renly’s death, by the way…he doesn’t give a crap anymore.
Maybe his time in the dungeion will help him finally move past Renly’s death and grow up.
Bravo Aiad. Well done. I totally agree with your assessment of Ser Loras.
Cleganebowl is the dumbest theory out there. It would serve the story better for The Hound to simply be dead along with Ned, Robb, Joffrey, Tywin, etc. Bringing “dead” characters back to life all the time is a weak, obnoxious plot device.
Back to loras growing up. He’s oblivious to the games going on around him. So he’s probably dazed and confused in prison. He’s never been part of the tyrell brain trust. He’s only been interested in fighting and partying. I can’t see him figuring out what to do without Margery or Olenna thinking for him. He goes to court and gets convicted without thinking of the trial by combat option.
He doesn’t come across as the sharpest knife in the drawer, does he?
Dan & Dave want to put a huge smile on every GOT fan’s face? Cleganebowl. Let the hype begin.
