Can anda be emo without looking emo?

There is no possible way I can ever look emo without my whole fuking life exploding all at once. I'm trying to look emo a little bit at a time, but the hair is a no go. :( my parents are always criticizing emo people and they don't know about my interests. Is it lame that I act emo and call that being emo?
