AudreyFreak picked Merida:
I'm surprised she and Jasmine have made it this far. Jasmine like Ariel (but to a WAY less harsh degree) is either hated or loved by feminists. on one hand she's very rebellious, an action girl, and determined to make her own choices and doesn't mind going against tradition at all. on the other hand, she can't seem to step outside without needing someone to save her, and being a damsel is apparently very unfeminist. she's also romantic and dresses in a way that entices men (which feminists will either hate for being self-objectifying or defend against "slut shaming").

This was a rather difficult pick since a lot of these characters are good to great role models. Ultimately, I chose Jasmine because even though she is rebellious, opinionated, and strong-willed, she's still problematic. Remember, these characters are mostly written by men and Jasmine fulfills the exotic Other role that is common in Western media when depicting Oriental or Middle Eastern characters. Plus there is her scene with Jafar which is all kinds of disturbing.

BelleRose829 picked Pocahontas:
Or Jasmine. Pocahontas is all "I want to be free" but she doesn't really take action, she romantically involved with three men, she falls into most situation instead of making them her own. Same with Merida here as long as one of the ones I mentioned leave I'm fine.

^ She menages to live in a sexist village, stands up for herself when Gaston says that women shouldn't read books, she bravely gives her freedom for her father, she goes to find her father, she is smart and witty, and not just the stereotypically sweet and innocent princess, her goal is not who-ing Gaston, she gets disgusted by the sexist thoughts of Gaston... I could go on and on.

coolsinger198 picked Pocahontas:
^ Excuse me. How did Jasmine not tell her father how she felt? She tells her father why she feels the way she does. She explains that she has no friends, and how she barely gets to do anything on her own. And from my perspective, that is telling the Sultan EXACTLY how she feels. Did you not hear her tell her father if she does marry she wants to do it for love?
Jasmine is capable of doing things for herself, and she is not weak at everything besides talking. she is a quick learner, and she is very clever, and in the TV series and sequels, she is very capable of defending herself. I know we are only counting the first movie, but still. Sure she doesnt take as much action as Mulan, but that doesn't mean she isnt a feminist. Her words, "I am not a prize to be won", shows she feels that women aren't prizes and that we should not be forced into marriage.

I am not trying to be rude, sorry if it comes across that way, but I feel what you said was false.

@coolsinger198 Oh, I really need to rewatch the movie. I forgot about that. Thanks for reminding me.
But still she never managed to convince her father that she doesn't want to get married. In the end there was still the rule that the Princesses should get married at the age of 16 right? And what if she didn't fall in love.
I feel like the only two things that make her kind of a feminist are the fact that she said "I'm not a prize to be won!" and "I'm a fast learner."

I'm not really sure if I should choose her or Poca. I guess I'll still choose Jasmine because the only way she could distract Jafar was by sexually attracting him and she still was really weak.

coolsinger198 picked Pocahontas:
^Yea, she did because he let her marry Aladdin. He saw her feelings for him at the end.

And how does distracting Jafar by sexually attracting him make her a less feminist then Poca? Jasmine is way more of a feminist than Poca. Jasmine's movie centers around her wanting a better life, and to be treated with respect as a woman should and for her to marry for true love, not to get married for fame and for her to be used.

Pocahontas's movie centers around the misunderstanding between the settlers and NA's and she is basically the peacemaker. She shows John Smith not to judge by apperances and that everything on Earth has its purpose.

So there you have it, Jasmine is more feminist than Pocahontas in my opinion.

I dunno... She just doesn't strikes me as super-feminist. She doesn't advocate for women's rights in the movie.

Hmm, good points on Poca, Punz and Belle. I think most feminists love Poca just because she's a racial minority and doesn't end up with a guy, which is two of their most favorite things.

one thing I hate about BATB is that Gaston is SUCH an unrealistic misogynist. Tvtropes has a word for that- "straw misogynist". He's way too easy to rebuff and insult so I don't find it particularly impressive or feminist that she does both.

OT but I'd love to see a princess who was intended to be feminist who says it's OK, good even, to want marriage or be sweet. Like Rarity <3

^I'm writing a fanfiction with a character just like that :) She stays a feminist but learns how to love. It's one of the reasons I love Mulan. Lots of people don't like that she ends up with a guy because she's too badass for that, but I like it because it shows you can be a strong feminist yet have love at the same time.

I'm not saying she's not a feminist, I just think the other princesses are more feminist than her.
