Meet the Parents! Brooklyn Nine-Nine Casts Sandra Bernhard and Stephen Root 

family will expand during November sweeps by way of guest-starring turns from Sandra Bernhard and Stephen Root.

TVLine has learned exclusively that in the Fox sophomore’s Nov. 9 episode, Bernhard (

Roseanne) will debut as Gina’s “eccentric” and “offbeat” mother, Darlene Linetti.

) will guest-star as Boyle’s “very New York Italian” father, Lynn.

There’s a “strong possibility” that both characters will make additional appearances during Season 2.

That definitely adds up. Someone who has a charm but can also be very abrasive? That’s Bernhard and Gina. And given some of the spineless types Root’s played in the past I could see him as Boyle’s dad, even if they don’t go like father, like son.

But Boyle isn’t exactly spineless, just way too nice and doesn’t realize stuff. But when he’s in complete cop mode or knows he needs to stand up, he’s fine. I like that even though he is supposed to be super ridiculous, the others don’t treat him that way.

Gina is so “out there” but in a weirdly, confident way that I’ve always wondered who in the world her mother could be. Sandra Bernhard is perfect; kudos on the casting.

Stephen Root is always a welcome sight on my TV, he’s got great comic timing, IMHO.
