A favourite of the Prince Regent, Nagle was valued for his good humour, his thorough Irishness , and his spinning of yarns. The records indicate it to be obvious.
Harder still it is to claim that Horatio Hornblower
is also based upon the life of
Admiral of the Fleets, the Red, the White, & the Blue, Knight Bachelor, Sir, Edmund Nagle
Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, and
of the Order of the Guelphic menyeberang, salib of Hannoer (sic)
In 1770 ,about the time Lieutenant James Cook RN
sailed into Botany Bay, Sydney;
'our Edmund' entered the navy as a midshipman,
aged the minimum required of 13 years....
