Merlin 5x09 synopsis 

Merlin knows he must act fast before Morgana’s twisted control over Gwen gets further out of hand.

But only the most powerful magic can save the Queen and this will not be easy, even for Merlin. As the High Priestess tightens her grip on Camelot, one thing is clear - she will not give up her puppet without a fight.

Colin Morgan is Merlin, Bradley James is Arthur, Angel Coulby is Gwen, Katie McGrath is Morgana, Richard Wilson is Gaius and John Hurt is the voice of the Great Dragon. Tom Hopper, Rupert Young, and Eoin Macken return as The Knights of the Round Table.

Me too, Kim. I've had weeks to vent my spleen over how they're dragging on this problematic storyline so I'm not complain about that right now. Just gonna sit and wait and laugh my ass off at the wreackage this episode is gonna cause a certain faction of this fandom. And I'm not even talking about the merthur shippers.

Finally some information on episode 9. This was what I have been waiting for. Episode 7 and 8 are going to be hard to watch, poor Gwen being used by her abuser to kill her husband and destroy Camelot.

So is the lake scene between Arthur and Gwen is in this episode ?

My issues with this story-line are well known, but it'll be interesting to see how things play out in this episode. I REALLY want Arthur to break the spell. Please?

Well I can't wait for this episode and how this storyline will be resolved.

It's kinda like wishing your life away. Though I too look forward to the resolution to this arc, at the same time that means we're that much closer to the possible end of a series we have all enjoyed over the years. I must admit I'm interested to see Gwen be a bit naughty, just as long as she does no permanent damage to her hubby or Camelot because we all know she will be feeling all kinds of guilty about her actions once she returns to herself.

So the trick gets busted for her mind control on Gwen? GOOD! It's going to take Emrys/Merlin and Alator to take this heifer down and free Gwen. The twist may be Gwen frees herself and takes down this witch.

It's likely in 5x09 so not this week or next week. The week after next week.

i've had such a random thought but do you think that gwen's in the lake because she goes looking for elyan's body - completely random but I can't think of a reason why she'd be in there and now we know how elyan was buried - although it it was on fire the boat so ...yeah i've got no idea! lol

I don't think so. Many of us are theorizing that it has something to do with the enchantment.

There is only Arthur and Merlin there with her. I think after the enchantment is lifted she leaves the castle, after the memories of all she has done comes back to her, goes to the lake and tries to drown herself. She is unable to forgive herself, when she realizes all that she has done under Morgana's influence but Merlin will probably take away the most painful of these memories, the ones that even Arthur does not know about, therefore giving her peace of mind. I am sure there will be alot of things done by her in a covert manner that only she will be aware of and no one else. Those are the memories Merlin will have to take away to give her peace.

Morgana is not woman enough to destroy Arthur up close or if she does she incapacites him. She gets others to do her dirty work and then disposes of them when caught. With everybody on to her a cornered Morgana commands Gwen to attempt suicide, knowing everone will rush to save Gwen. And it gives her a chance to escape. Cowardly bitch. i hope it drives home nobody gives two sh*ts about her when she dies.

I know Lancelot killed himself (although that was only mentioned not seen.) but don't you think an episode or a significant amount of time dedicated to Gwen's maybe suicide (especially if she's acting from guilt rather than magic) would be far too dark for younger views? I'm not sure what the show demographic is but I assumed it would be from eight year old's, families and up.

You can tell which people don't read synopsis/spoilers of upcoming episodes for they are the ones who don't think Gwen is enchanted. Well, she is!

I honestly don't think non-enchanted Gwen would try to kill herself from guilt over what she's done. She is too strong for that, and that would be a cowardly act. Not to mention the fact that she would never do that to Arthur.

I decided on my way to lunch today that I'm going to just sit back and watch what they give us. My theories are always wrong anyway, and the shows are already made. We know she comes back to herself in 5x09, and that's all we know.

@Kim: Agreed. I decided a long time to stop coming up with theories because I'm always wrong a long time ago. I'm gonna sit back and watch and see what happens with this story line.

@kbrand: but what if she thought Arthur was dead and thought she killed him? Just a thought. This could happen, though I'm sure she's still enchanted in that scene and Morgana had her try and kill herself.

I will say this, it has us all in a stir. The first five parts of the series we all had a jaundiced eye and no commitment but now, because the sacred couple are in the midst of a trial we are all over it. The bastards might actually know what they are doing....I hate to admit it, but have you noticed, we are all TERRIBLY VESTED? We didn't give a rats ass before with the hackneyed hehehe, I said Hackneyed...and tired and rather boring Arthur and Merlin dynamic which has not grown and is stale, but touch the sacred couple and we are all over it. No, they might not be entirely stupid. Yaaaaaaaaawn....play tomorrow. Kinda interested in how this plays out, must say, despite myself.

Very true, Stacey. I didn't give a rats ass before (though I did like "The Disir" quite a lot). Now, I'm anxiously awaiting each episode (even though I know this storyline is gonna drive me mad) wondering what's gonna happen. And it isn't just Arwen shippers who are acting this way. The whole of the Merlin fandom seems to be invested in this storyline. I'm sure once it's done, I'll go back to not really caring about the episodes until the two part finale cause I really wanna know how this series is gonna end.

Agreed I'm interested to see how they will wrap up this storyline and give us decent Arwen scenes after Gwen returns to normal.

Stacey is so right. This storyline has gotten hold of us and we all woke up, lol. No matter what anybody says when our couple is front and center, nobody is bored that's for sure. If I didn't read spoilers, I don't know if I could stand this. Just knowing that in this episode, SOMEBODY does something helps us to be able to struggle through this. It's hard though. At least the truth will out this time and not be buried with the bracelet somewhere. We'd be in the pits of despair if we had that happen again. I just hope something is done in a way that she won't be dealing with all the awful things she's done for the rest of her life. I like what Lailastar said about the most painful memories being erased or something like that. Hope they do something to ease her sufferings in the future and please, please, please, bring sweetness and healing back to our precious ones.

Hi everybody! After a long time out of fanpop I'm back. Reading all you have said I feel better. I was worried that Gwen was going to be like that for a long time, I would not be able to stand it. I'm really looking forward this episode and hope that Arthur breaks the spell. I'm craving for Arwen scenes, for an Arwen kiss in fact. After the spell is broken we need some love scenes don't we?
