menulis the first chapter of a novel...?

I've been working on my novel for a while now (since January of 2009, actually). I've got a lot of stuff written, and I'm starting to string it all together now (it's nowhere near done, though) but I cannot seem to write the first chapter. I don't know how to hook people. I've tried a few different beginnings, but nothing satisfies me. It always turns out either too cliche, atau too boring, atau too descriptive, atau not hooking, atau it starts at a weird point. Any tips on how to write the first chapter of a fantasi novel without giving too much information away?
