it was in the beginning if anda remember stefan was in cinta with katherine but something happened then she was trapped in the tomb and fate found him another doppleganger it could have easly been elena and silas if he wasn't trapped too it's just the way things turned out

no it doesn't matter who it is but i dont suppose elena would ever be in cinta with silas but maybe at one point stefan was in cinta with katherine but that ship has sailed all all the years they spent apart and stefan and elena were in cinta at one point so it could happen again
