ALL OPINIONS ARE MY OWN AND ARE NOT INFUENCED oleh ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT I HAVE PERCIEVED FROM THE SHOW. NOT INTENDED TO BASH ANY CHARACTERS.
6. Sam has a good heart.
No fan can doubt that at the jantung of all Winchester decisions lies good intention. Sam is certainly no exception. Sam makes decisions lebih based on passion and jantung as opposed to Dean, whose decisions are lebih rational and calculated (shoot first, ask pertanyaan later as Sammy has put it before). This ideology puts him on a lebih emotional level with the people he helps, which is why he is often regarded as the lebih compassionate of the two. In a normal world, Sam would probably be your average Good Samaritan. But we all know the world of supernatural is far from normal. There are forces at work there that neither Dean nor Sam can control and these forces tend to enjoy reeking havoc on our two heroes. Take drinking demon blood again, his intentions were pure: save lebih people. However the addiction and distance it caused between the brothers probably outweighed the pros. Getting back to my point, if we look at the base of all the decisions that Sam has ever made, we can see his good intention, no matter how warped the outcome might become. Sam is a hunter, not just because it is in his blood, but because it allows him to save people. For those he couldn’t save, I can imagine that they are at least grateful that he tried. Take Madison for instance; remember how torn up he was when he realized that she could not be saved? And even though Dean offered, he declined and killed her himself, not because he wanted to, but because she wanted him to. Often, I find that he carries a great weight on his shoulders. After starting the apocalypse, he became even lebih determined to save people and ultimately sacrificed himself to save the world. He understood that since he started it, he had to be the one to finish it. And he was so scared, if anda watch the moments before he jumps, he’s looking back at Dean for reassurance. It’s not much, but it allows Sam a little bit of peace before his own personal hell. Sammy is selfless, it might not be as apparent as it is with Dean, but behind everything, lies a very good heart.
7. Sam is mysterious.
One of the most interesting aspects of supernatural is that the characters are not all clear-cut and dry. The multi-dimensions of the characters never fails to amaze me. To me, Sam has always had a touch of mystery. Going back to as early as season 1, we see many hints of possible storyline branches. Sam was bombarded with visions and psychic abilities, keeping us guessing while still shrouding it in mystery. And what fan didn’t wonder a bit, at the end of season 2 when Sammy shoots Jake in cold blood? (Which was a debat also raised oleh Azazel, who asked Dean if he was sure he brought back all of Sam) Moving meneruskan, ke depan in time, season 3 brings us into Sam’s quest to break Dean’s deal, but we also see him growing increasingly comfortable with hunting (no longer flinching when he has to kill). Whether this is because of the reason he provided (that he needed to get used to hunting alone when Dean was gone) atau for some other reason, I’m not sure. Season 4 really brings to light how much he has changed, when anda see him off the rails with Ruby, indulging in demon blood and using his powers. We all see here that she has him wrapped around her little finger and even dear old Dean can’t seem to shake her influence till the end of season 4. What has him trusting her so much lebih then his own brother has got us; the blood? The powers? atau maybe something more? Season 5 shows the brothers in their toughest battle yet; against the devil himself. The strain on the relationship is clearly evident. Sam constantly lies, which breaks my jantung because whatever he is keeping, it’s clearly a burden too large to be carried. Yet he locks it away and refuses to let Dean in. Onward to season 6, we see Soulless Sam, the pinnacle of mystery. Half the time, I’m trying to guess if he’s faking atau telling the truth. I find myself asking, “is he aware of what he’s doing?” This Sam is not the one we all grew to cinta and care for, and its quite alarming how there are so many loose ends with him, how we are unable to know for sure what is and what is not.
8. Sam is angry.
Maybe this is a tragic consequence of internalizing everything, but it is no doubt a part of his character. Let’s backtrack to his childhood. No mom. Dad dragging him all around the country and not letting him settle down. Dean not telling him much about anything. I would certainly be a little upset. Now as he gets a bit older, things start to shift. Still no mom. Dad is still dragging him all around the country, but now he has started training Sam to be, well anda guessed it, a hunter. Dean finally spills the beans and now monsters are real and he should be afraid of the dark. Lovely. Fast meneruskan, ke depan to the end of high school. Still no mom. Instead of congratulating him for winning a full scholarship to Stanford, dad kicks him out. And well, Dean doesn’t challenge dad so I guess he’s on his own. But Stanford wasn’t so bad. It allows Sam the freedom for once, to choose a different life. He maintains virtually no contact with dad atau Dean for two years. But he’s happy, for the first time. He’s got a girlfriend, good grades and life is really starting to look up for Sammy. That all ends when he is dragged back into hunting and Jess dies. Not only does he lose someone important, he is now back in a life that he never wanted, and tried to get away from. But Sam, being Sam does not blow up from the anger, it “disappears”. To where? Well we’ll just have to ask Sam won’t we? Now in chronological order, end of season 1, he loses Dad. End of season 2, he finds out he’s going to lose Dean. End of season 3, he loses Dean. End of season 4, looks like the demon chick has been tricking anda all along and anda just started the apocalypse. End of season 5, the only way the world will not crash and burn is if anda jump into hell and endure endless torture from a very pissed off Michael and Lucifer. In season 6, anda return as a soulless robot until mid-season, and it ends off with your malaikat friend declaring himself to be ‘God’. Season 7 begins with, oh, and he’s not fixing your wall, so you’ll have to deal with your memories of hell, as well as a new ancient creature, which doesn’t die. I’m not sure about you, but I can see a lot of anger building right there.
9. Sam doesn't judge.
Young Sam is certainly presented as the lebih open of the two brothers. He befriends virtually everyone, and he’s also the one who thinks twice about people. There are incidents that he starts to realize that though they may be a ‘monster’, sometimes they aren’t so different from humans. The ‘vegetarian’ vampire is such an incident. Despite Dean’s headstrong ways, he was able to convince him to let her go. He saw the lebih ‘human’ side of her, that even though she was a vampire, a danger to man, she had made a decision to a different lifestyle. And his first instinct when he met that guy Jack Montgomery was to try and talk, reason with him. Sam tried to explain that he had a choice, that he didn’t have to become a monster. And who could forget Amy? A shadow from his past, she killed her own mom to protect Sam. And even now, she only took live people because her son was dying of an illness. To Sam, these reasons were justifiable to let her go. Of course Dean kills her later on, deeming her to be a threat to humans, which we will never know for sure. Sam is extremely angry with this, because he knew what she sacrificed, in order to live a normal life (becoming a mortician to have access to dead corpses) and also because he personally knew her. I often wonder if Sam’s ability to sympathize with other ‘monsters’ lies in his own plight, being infected with demon blood. Like he said, he will never be wiped clean and he tries to live his life as normally as he can. He certainly understands them on a level that even Dean cannot imagine. And lastly, we have Cas. When Cas gulps all the souls of purgatory, he proclaims himself God and disappears. Dean is hurt oleh Cas’ betrayal and doesn’t know what to do. Sam however, though he knows what Sam has done, reaches out to him. He calls Cas to him, and tells him that they can find a way to save him together. Sam’s openness to people, despite their flaws is what makes him such a powerful character.
10. Sam is lost.
anda would think that in a life where either Dean atau his dad took the wheel, Sam would be set. However, this only makes him very lost, as he tries to navigate on his own through the world. Let’s start at Stanford. He has a steady life and is happy, yet he even admits that he’s always felt ‘different’ from the other people. Maybe it was the hunter lifestyle that was engrained in him, but he couldn’t just live an ignorant life, like other people. All the stability he had in this life is gone when Jess dies, and he realizes that he can’t stay. So he goes hunting with Dean. Dean serves as a mentor, a friend and a guide. For Sam, he both needs and doesn’t need a guide. Let me explain. He needs a guide in the way that often he’s not sure what to do and he needs some guidance. Because he is rebellious, sometimes a guide can bash with his own ideals, which causes tension. We’ve seen glimpses of Sam without his ‘guide’ in episodes such as mystery spot, where he becomes a hardened hunter after Dean dies. We’ve also seen Sam rely on the wrong guide (Ruby). I must admit though, her timing is impeccable. She arrives at a time that Sam is most vulnerable, after the death of Dean; Sam has pretty much lost it and is drinking himself to death. She presents herself as someone he can trust, and eventually gets him addicted to demon blood, leading him on till he unknowingly starts the apocalypse. Much of the series focuses on him getting lost and trying to find his own way. His father and brother have protected him, to the point that he doesn’t know what to do when they’re not there. Sam has asked Dean before to let him, ‘grow up’, and to have a relationship as equals. And regarding what I berkata earlier, he has a good heart, but often he loses his way, which leads to disastrous consequences. Everything seems to start out good and golden, however it never ends up how he imagined it. Hopefully as the seasons progress, he’ll be able to find his own true self.
