yes they showed us they got the tattoo on the ep but they must have go it before the ep I would have cinta to see that part were they went to a tattoo toko and got it done that would have been awesome to see.
We don't see them getting the tato atau know exactly when they got them. However, it must have been between jantung in S2 (you can see Sam doesn't have it yet) and Jus In Bello in S3, when they first tampil the tattoos.
They didn't get the tattoo in an episode of Supernatural, but when they were much younger. Except, Sam got it of oleh the Help of Castiel, so that Crowley would be able to posses him to remove Gadreel from Sammy (9.10). So, now, I do not know if Sammy got it back atau not

We know they didn't have them pre-series because Sam gets possessed in season 2. We also saw shirtless scenes of both brothers in the first two seasons where they were tattoo-less.
