"FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD" (2015) Review

I have never seen "FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD", the 2015 adaptation of Thomas Hardy's 1874 novel, in the theaters. And yet . . . my knowledge of this film led me to view two sebelumnya adaptations. And finally, I found the chance to view this adaptation, directed oleh Thomas Vinterberg.

"FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD" told the story of a young 19th century rural English woman named Bathsheba Everdeene and the three men in her life - a domba farmer-turned-shepherd named Gabriel Oak; her neighbor and owner of the neighborhood's largest farm, William Boldwood;...

"LOUISIANA" (1984) Review

Thirty-four years ago, HBO had aired a three-part miniseries about the life and travails of a nineteenth century Southern belle named Virginia Tregan. The miniseries was called "LOUISIANA" and it starred Margot Kidder and Ian Charleson.

Directed oleh the late Philippe de Broca, "LOUISIANA" was based upon the "Fausse-Riviere" Trilogy, written oleh Maurice Denuzière, one of the screenwriters. It told the story of Virginia's ruthless devotion to her first husband's Louisiana cotton plantation called Bagatelle . . . and her cinta for the plantation's overseer, an Englishman...

"HEAVEN AND HELL: NORTH AND SOUTH BOOK III" (1994) - EPISODE ONE Commentary

If there is one chapter in John Jakes' NORTH AND SOUTH saga that is reviled oleh the fans, it the televisi adaptation of the third one, set after the American Civil War. First of all, the theme of post-war Reconstruction has never been that populer with tales about the four-year war. lebih importantly, fan of Jakes' saga seemed to have a low opinion of "HEAVEN AND HELL: NORTH AND SOUTH BOOK III", the 1994 adaptation of Jakes' third North and South novel, published back in 1987.

My opinion of the 1994 miniseries slightly...

"GEORGE WASHINGTON" (1984) Review

Twenty-four years before the award-winning HBO miniseries "JOHN ADAMS" aired, the CBS network aired a miniseries about the first U.S. President, George Washington. Simply titled "GEORGE WASHINGTON", this three-part miniseries was based upon two biographies written oleh James Thomas Flexner - 1965's "George Washington, the Forge of Experience, 1732–1775" and 1968's "George Washington in the American Revolution, 1775–1783".

"GEORGE WASHINGTON" spanned at least forty years in the life of the first president - from 1743, when his father Augustine Washington died...

"POLDARK" SERIES ONE (2015): EPISODES FIVE TO EIGHT

Within the past year, I had developed a major interest in penulis Winston Graham's 1945-2002 "POLDARK" literary saga and the two televisi adaptations of it. Series One of the detik adaptation produced oleh Debbie Horsfield, premiered on the BBC (in Great Britain) and PBS (in the United States) last year. Consisting of eight episodes, Series One of "POLDARK" was an adaptation of 1945's "Ross Poldark - A Novel of Cornwall, 1783-1787" and "Demelza - A Novel of Cornwall, 1788-1790".
Whereas Episodes One to Four adapted the 1945 novel, Episodes...

"PERSUASION" (1971) Review

This adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1818 novel turned out to be the first of the old Jane Austen televisi adaptations that the BBC aired during the 1970s and 80s. Produced and directed oleh Howard Baker, and adapted oleh Julian Mitchell; this two-part miniseries starred Ann Firbanks and Bryan Marshall.

As many fan of Austen’s novel would know, "PERSUASION" told the story of Anne Elliot, the middle daughter of a vain and spendthrift baronet, who finds herself reunited with her former finance, a Naval officer of lesser birth named Frederick Wentworth. Eight years before...

"AND THEN THERE WERE NONE" (2015) Review

Ever since I gave up membaca the "NANCY DREW" novels at the age of thirteen, I have been a fan of those written oleh Agatha Christie. And that is a hell of a long time. In fact, my fandom toward Christie's novels have extended toward the film and televisi adaptations. Among those stories that have captured my imagination were the adaptations of the author's 1939 novel, "AND THEN THERE WERE NONE".

To be honest, I have seen at least three adaptations of the 1939 novel - the 1945, 1966 and 1974 adaptations - before I had read the novel. Although I found...

"THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1948) Review

There are times when I find myself amazed at the longevity of Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel, "The Three Musketeers". The novel has been in circulation for nearly 170 years. Hollywood and other film industries have been adapting the novel for the film atau televisi for nearly a century. One adaptation I recently viewed was the Hollywood movie produced and released oleh MGM Studios in 1948.

We all know the story. A young Frenchman from Gascon sets out for Paris in the early 17th century to gabung the King's Musketeers. During this journey, he meets a beautiful,...

"POLDARK" SERIES ONE (1975): EPISODES FIVE TO EIGHT

Last winter, I began watching the BBC's 1975-77 adaptation of Winston Graham's literary series about the life of a British Army officer and American Revolutionary War veteran, following his return to his halaman awal in Cornwall. The first four episodes proved to be adaptation of the first novel in Graham's series, 1945's "Ross Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1783-1787". Episodes Five to Eight focused on the series' detik novel, 1946's "Demelza: A Novel of Cornwall, 1788-1790".

Episode Four ended with Ross Poldark, a Cornish landowner and mine owner,...

THE MAJOR PROBLEMS OF "HEAVEN AND HELL: NORTH AND SOUTH BOOK III" (1994)

Any fan of the John Jakes’ NORTH AND SOUTH trilogy would be lebih than happy to tell anda that the worst entry in the author’s saga about two American families in the mid 19th century was the last one, "HEAVEN AND HELL: North and South Book III". Those fan would be speaking of the 1994 televisi adaptation, not the novel itself. Unlike many of these fans, I do not share their low opinion of the three-part miniseries. But I will not deny that "HEAVEN AND HELL" had its share of problems. Below is a daftar of I consider...
