It was a Saturday morning. I had spent Friday night with my grandparents. Grandpa took me halaman awal Saturday afternoon. Father was waiting at the door. He said, "Ellie, anda have homework this weekend." I said, "I already did it last night, Father. I did it before going to Grandma and Grandpa's. Don't anda remember?" Father glared at me and said, "Don't get smart with me, Ellie." I said, "I'm not being smart with you. I'm telling the truth." He said, "Let me give anda what my father gave me." He slapped me across the face. The forced knocked me to the ground. Grandpa put himself between me and Father and cried, "What kind of a man are you?!" Father said, "The kind of man my father taught me to be." Grandpa said, "That's not what a man should be." Father just drank his whiskey. Grandpa said, "You used to be a much better man before anda turned to that. Why did anda turn to it? What happened to you?" Father said, "I don't want to talk about it. Besides, it's time I get my belt." Grandpa asked, "Do anda feel like a man when anda beat Ellie?" Father said, "Yeah. What's your point?" Grandpa said, "If you're man enough to hit a child, hit me." Father gave him a funny look. Grandpa said, "Seriously, hit me. You're such a big man." I didn't want to see my father beat my grandpa, so I ran into the forest nearby. I thought, It's for the best. Nobody's going to miss me. They didn't even notice I left. As I walked through the snow-covered forest, I wept like I never wept before.
No Stable Place
Aside from Uncle Bob, the only other family members who paid me any mind were my grandparents. My grandfather passed away about a tahun and a half after my father's untimely death. My grandmother lived until I started high school. When she was alive, I could always go to her with a problem. Every time I would have a bad hari at school, I would go to her. She would say, "Tell me what's wrong, John." I would tell her what was wrong, and she would make everything better. When she passed away when I started high school, I was devastated. Now I had no one to go to when I had a bad day. That's when my record listening became lebih frequent. Other than my dog, Beatle, it was my only sumber of comfort. I really missed having a person to talk to. I missed having someone who listened to me. When he wasn't working, I could call Uncle Bob and talk to him, but it wasn't the same. Grandma seemed to have an answer for everything. Nobody else seemed to have that gift.
