I don't actually root for him, and everytime he did something wrong- I wanted everyone to find out so his true colors would be revealed. But he's a wonderful character and provides me with so much entertainment. And I actually think his transformation over the seasons made sense and was gradual... unlike Victoria & Paul who went from being the worst parents in the world to the next day being so loving & supportive of their children. Dan's gone back & forth being good, being bad, being really bad, repenting & being good again, trying to be good but doing it in a bad way... and it's made sense along the way.
