I had mixed opinions about last nights episode and I felt like the best way for me to sort it out was to make an article. #whatageek
First off, I loved the IDEA of this episode. It was a brilliant idea IMO, just poorly executed. I had wondered if maybe there was a new director atau something for this episode, but there wasn't. I feel like there was no reason for this episode to have been so off beat and choppy. I feel like they focused too much on David in this episode. Once again, the plot idea was great, but they should have taken a bit of the focus away from David. It seemed like rather than the episode being half David's, like it normally would, it was like 3/4ths David's. If that even makes sense.
I saw someone write on OUAT's facebook page that they were annoyed oleh how Snow and Charming are always in other people's stories. I agree with this, actually. I do wish that they would use another character sometimes, but it doesn't bother me too much.
So back to the plot of the episode. I felt like this episode didn't quite "come around" like they normally do, if that makes sense. Cause normally they'll place a plot-point at the beginning of the episode and then oleh the end it all makes sense. But oleh the end of this episode, I still felt confused. I understand it now, after thinking about it A LOT.
The idea that someone goes seeking something to make them loose their fears, but it makes them have to face their fears (which is themself), I thought was great. I liked how it continued to follow David to Storybrooke, and he had to defeat himself. Then Zelena took the remainder of his sword. (Which I found to be kind of sad cause it's such an iconic piece for the show). All of that was great. But there were still some things that were off. Like when Charming and Rapunzel defeated their fear-selves, it seemed much lebih physical than mental. And oleh that I mean, fears are in your mind and they come from physical things. But in the episode they both defeated their fears oleh physically defeating them rather than overcoming them mentally. There wasn't a moment when they were both like "I've overcome my fear" it was lebih like I just killed my fear. Does that make sense?
The other thing that seemed strange was that they didn't explain why Rapunzel's hair grew so much. She would have had to been their for centuries to have her hair grow that long without magic. And if she was there for centuries then her parents would have died oleh then, unless THEY were being sustained oleh magic. I also thought that her fears weren't stressed enough. The story about her brother was kind of confusing (I'm probably just making myself seem stupid, now), I felt like her fear wasn't very clear. I know what it was, but it wasn't very apparent. Also was the tower there the whole time before she showed up? Then she just decided to stay there forever? This had such potential, but had some plot holes IMO. Even if they just came up with some ridiculous story about where the Tower came from and why her hair is so long, I would have been satisfied.
Back to Charming for a moment. *Slight sidetrack* shouldn't he technically be called King Charming at this point? lol. Is he even still a prince? Anyway, I loved the idea that they explored his suffering with losing Emma. We've seen how Snow feels about it many times. But Charming's feelings toward the topic aren't focused on as much. For me, that was something I wanted them to explore.
As I think about it I think the thing that may have happened with this episode is that they didn't film enough footage and that's why some scenes were too long and others seemed out of place. For example, the scene when Rapunzel had to face her fear was very long and slow to me. The two scenes that I thought were out of place was the one with Hook and Emma talking (no, this isn't cause I ship Swanfire) and the one with Regina and Henry talking. I felt like both of the were kind of acak and pointless. Granted, I may need to rewatch the episode.
I hope that they make sure that this plot wasn't a one-time-pointless-episode that never effects anything in the future. I'm pretty sure that that won't be the case because Wicked has what's left of Charming's sword and that's a result of this episode. That will most likely be important in the future. Hopefully that whole idea of Charming losing his symbol of courage will have some sort of effect on him in future episodes.
Lastly, this episode reminded me A LOT of the cinderella episode back in Season 1. Here's why: in both episodes they introduced iconic princesses who's flashback plots weren't very interesting BUT highly effected something in the plot. With cinderella it was Rumpel's "arrest" (lol). It showed how the Charmings got hold of him in the first place, which caused all of the proceeding events. With Rapunzel it was Charmings fears.
secara keseluruhan, keseluruhan this was a great episode that could have been executed better, so it wasn't a fail when anda think about it like that ^.^
