I always think that Twilight was Spike's, erm, foster mom.

For some reason I look at him like her little brother. My husband goes with the "mom/son" theory though.

Hmm, I never really saw it as a mother/son sort of relationship...more like good friends, possibly sibling-like. He definitely enjoys being her assistant, but unfortunately, she doesn't always treat him as well as she should. Occasionally he does seem like a bit of a slave...>.>

Like some of the other commenters, I see Spike as Twilight's unrelated little brother. I mean, they have a pretty typical sibling-like relationship. I mean, he is, of course, her assistant, but he's proud of her abilities the way a younger sibling would be (s1E6) and they really care about each other (s1E24). I'd say he's a bit of all three choices, with some sibling-ness as well.

@blup: Actually, they do. Some consider Spike a son/slave to Twilight Sparkle. Son: Twilight loves him like a son. Slave: Twilight treats Spike like her personal slave.

I have definitely noticed some mother/son qualities of their friendship. Spike is a baby dragon, and Twi takes good care of him and you can tell that she loves him a lot.
But generally I see him as what he is: her assistant.

To me it seems like a brother/sister relationship. Sometimes older siblings do have to take a larger role in raising their younger siblings if they become orphaned and one is an adult, or if the parents just aren't around much. It's not exactly a mother/son relationship even though Twilight does take care of him. Plus they sometimes squabble like siblings often do.

As proved in line from Winter wrap up.. She isn't his mom.. But she could still be his guardian..

But she acts rather motherly towards him. I actually find it cute :)
