While Severus made bad choices when he was young, and was able to correct them by making other, more positive choices later. Severus wanted to become a DE to impress Lily. Through out the course of the books (later movies) you learn bit by bit, hint after hint, about the Professor. A word here, a trust shown there, a betrayal given over there, distrust fostered, dislike intended, honor implied, loyalty accepted, brilliance implied.....each page upon which he was mentioned was designed to give his story more character and depth.
