Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Everything you need to know to start watching \'Game of Thrones\' at Season 5
Game of Thrones has been added to your favorites.
If you\'re already among the show\'s passionate legion of fans, you probably know that "Game of Thrones" returns to HBO for a fifth season starting on April 12.
But what if you\'re not addicted to "Thrones" yet? What if you\'re still on the outside looking in at this pop culture phenomenon, which seems to break the Internet on a regular basis with the Red Wedding, the death of Ned Stark, that whole "twincest" thing, etc.?
Well, don\'t worry would-be "Thrones" watchers. Zap2it\'s handy "Game of Thrones" primer has everything you need to dive in midstream on this fantasy series based on George R.R. Martin\'s "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series. Never again will your "Game of Thrones" friends be able to say "you know nothing."
Without further ado, here\'s everything you need to know about "Game of Thrones" to start watching at Season 5:
You\'ll meet a lot of main characters - but don\'t get too attached
Even the most die-hard "Game of Thrones" fans have a hard time keeping all of the show\'s characters straight, so assume going in that you won\'t remember everyone. Still, the main characters have now become iconic -- yes, you know who Dragon Lady is -- even if you don\'t know their names.
Don\'t get too attached to any one person on "Game of Thrones," no matter how iconic, though. The show has a nasty habit of killing off the people you like the most, which is why the words "Red Wedding" will forever be a part of our pop culture lexicon.
Sadly just because the show has a lot of characters doesn\'t mean they all hang out together. Instead there are a bunch of separate storylines that only now are beginning to come together in Season 5 -- yes, finally some major players are crossing paths. The fact that all your favorite characters have been kept apart for so long gets incredibly frustrating because
clearly Jon Snow and Daenerys need to join forces and ... sorry, getting ahead of ourselves.
You\'ll travel around one massive continent and across an ocean
There are a lot of important locations in "Game of Thrones," and this map should help you keep them all straight. The capital of
Westeros is King\'s Landing, which appropriately is where the king lives. His seat of power is known as the Iron Throne, and it\'s a pretty uncomfortable monstrosity made up of hundreds of swords melted together.
Some other points of interest you should know: There\'s something called
The Wall on the northern border of the country, and it\'s a massive creation of ice designed to keep invaders out. Near the Wall is Winterfell, the home of the Starks, one of the show\'s central families. The Lannisters, another key family, call Casterly Rock their home base, but all the important Lannister characters on the show live in King\'s Landing. The southernmost area of Westeros is the region of Dorne, a new location in Season 5.
But Westeros isn\'t the only main setting in "Game of Thrones." Across the body of water known as the Narrow Sea is the continent of
Essos, and it\'s there that Daenerys Targaryen\'s (Emilia Clarke) storyline is set as she makes her way to invade Westeros. There\'s also the Iron Islands, Braavos, Skagos ...
Yes, this a massive world, and it\'s so big the TV show opening credits change each episode to remind you of relevant key locations. Thanks, HBO.
The words \'winter is coming\' should give you a chill
A weird quirk of the world of "Game of Thrones" is that seasons last years, so if Westeros isn\'t prepared for winter, then its people are in bad shape. Considering it\'s fall when the series starts and the continent is just coming off a very long summer -- and to clarify "long," some of the younger characters have lived their entire lives during this summer -- it\'s expected that the forthcoming winter is going to be even longer.
Unfortunately for Westeros, the countryside is devastated because of its recent wars over the Iron Throne, and no one in power has made sure the country is prepared to last out the winter. The Stark family\'s house motto is "Winter is coming," and any time someone says those words it\'s a reminder of the bad news on the horizon.
You\'ll be rooting for the Starks, even though a lot of them are dead
When viewers are first introduced to "Game of Thrones," it\'s the Starks of Winterfell who are the clear heroes. Patriarch
Ned Stark (Sean Bean), who is presented as the show\'s hero, gets beheaded in the first season, and his wife Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) and eldest son Robb (Richard Madden) get brutally slaughtered in Season 3 at the Red Wedding.
While the death of Ned was jaw-dropping at the time, it was the Red Wedding that will go down in history as being "Game of Thrones\'" most devastating moment. The fact that the show killed off the person who was assumed to be the main character was one thing, but slaughtering his wife and heir as they were looking to get redemption for his death was not only shocking, but proof that this is a story without a happy ending.
There are still plenty of living Starks to root for, even if none of them will get vengeance for their dead family any time soon. Ned\'s eldest daughter
Sansa (Sophie Turner) is currently sort-of in hiding with Westeros\' former Master of Coin/a dude who had a thing for her mom, Littlefinger (Aiden Gillan). Though she gets flak for not being as intense as her younger sister, it\'s actually Sansa who currently has the best chance of leading a rebellion and reclaiming Winterfell for the Starks.
Arya (Maisie Williams) has always been a tomboy and spent a decent amount of "Game of Thrones" pretending to be a boy. She struck out on a mostly solo journey after the death of her dad and is now a very hardened, brutal killing machine -- and one of fans\' favorite characters.
Jon Snow (Kit Harington), who joined an order called the Night\'s Watch at the Wall in Season 1 and there has pledged his service to protect the realm from forces outside Westeros. He\'s done a pretty great job of it so far, having defeated an army of invaders in Season 4. No one knows who Jon\'s mother is, and there\'s a pretty good chance Ned isn\'t even his dad.
Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) and Rickon (Art Parkinson) both won\'t appear in Season 5, but they still likely have important roles to play. Bran, who is crippled from the waist down, took a journey north beyond the Wall that put him face-to-face with a mystical person known as the Three-Eyed Raven. Meanwhile, Rickon peaced out in Season 3 and it\'s not really clear what he\'s up to (though there are some funny theories).
The foils to the Starks are the Lannisters, who are responsible for a lot of deaths, both Stark and otherwise. Queen Regent
Cersei (Lena Headey) organized the murder of her husband King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) -- aka Ned\'s BFF -- in Season 1.
Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) executed Ned, and her dad Tywin (Charles Dance) organized the Red Wedding. Both Joffrey and Tywin have since been murdered.
Fun fact: Cersei\'s three children aren\'t actually the product of her and King Robert\'s marriage, but rather her incestuous secret relationship with her twin brother
Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) is king, and is going to be married to Joffrey\'s widow Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). Cersei\'s only daughter, Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free), is currently hanging out in Dorne, where she\'s engaged to be wed to a Dornish prince.
Then there\'s Cersei and Jaime\'s younger brother
Tyrion (Peter Dinklage). He has long been considered the "good" Lannister by fans, and for good reason. As someone born with dwarfism, he\'s always been the black sheep of the family, with both his father and sister blaming him for the death of his mother. (She died in childbirth, so ... technically?)
Throughout the first few seasons of "Game of Thrones" Tyrion used the temporary opportunity of being in a position of power to do what he thought was best for the realm, but his story took a turn for the worse in Season 4. Tywin sentenced him to death after wrongly framing him for Joffrey\'s murder (for the record, here\'s how it actually went down), and then slept with Tyrion\'s lady love/prostitute to literally put the nail in his coffin. In a pretty startling plot twist and character transformation, Tyrion killed his dad during the Season 4 finale and escaped from King\'s Landing.
Long story short: You\'re going to really, really,
The title of "Game of Thrones" makes it clear that this show is about a quest for power, but the person with the best claim to the Iron Throne doesn\'t even live in Westeros. Her name is
Daenerys Targaryen, and even if you\'ve never seen an episode of "Game of Thrones" in your life, you\'ve certainly seen the Dragon Lady. As Tumblr elegantly shows, she has earned viewers\' respect and is largely considered "Game of Thrones\'" main hero.
First, some context: The Targaryens were the longtime rules of Westerors -- heck, they united the country originally -- but their dynasty was toppled by Robert Baratheon years before "Game of Thrones" began. Since he is dead and his "son"/the current king Tommen isn\'t actually a Baratheon (see: Lannister twincest), the door is open for a new legitimate ruler to take the Iron Throne.
That\'s where Dany comes into play. She is the last living Targaryen (that we know of), and she has spent every season of the series amassing an army, gathering supporters and advisors and generally becoming a better queen so she will be ready to reclaim the Iron Throne. At this point everyone is patiently awaiting her invasion of Westeros -- it\'s been
four seasons already -- but it, like winter, is still coming.
Pretty much everyone else wants to sit on the Iron Throne
There have been a number of people trying to argue that they have the best claim to the throne since King Robert\'s death, and now basically everyone thinks they would be the best ruler. The last living candidate with a pretty good stake in the fight is Robert\'s older brother
Stannis (Stephen Dillane). He is currently helping Jon out at the Wall, but it\'s clear his end goal is to wrest control from the Lannisters.
Then there are the Boltons. If the Lannisters have some redemptive qualities as a family, there\'s no chance for justice with the Boltons. Long story short, these were former Stark allies who betrayed them to join with the Lannisters and get more power. Their most hatable act is that dad
Roose (Michael McElhatton) helped execute the Red Wedding, but his bastard-made-legitimate son and all-around sadist Ramsay (Iwan Rheon) has a habit for flaying, maiming, castrating and generally torturing people for fun, making him the most evil character on "Game of Thrones." Though they haven\'t made an outright claim for the throne, knowing the Boltons they\'re ready to jump off the sinking Lannister ship and join forces with whoever is the strongest.
You\'ll meet dragons, direwolves and White Walkers
Though "Game of Thrones" started as a political drama set in a fantasy world, it\'s very much dug into its magical roots in subsequent seasons. The most notable signs of the shift are Daenerys\' three dragons,
Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion, who were born at the end of Season 1 (see earlier GIF of Dany with a baby dragon). In the time since they\'ve grown from hatchlings to uncontrollable beasts, and Dany had to imprison two of them in Season 4\'s finale (Drogon, below, is MIA, though he does make an appearance on Season 5\'s poster).
Direwolves aren\'t technically magical creatures, but they are considered somewhat mythical and are the sigil of House Stark. In the "Game of Thrones" pilot, each Stark child was presented with a direwolf pup, and they\'re without a doubt the cutest part of the show. The only direwolf that really has a presence anymore is Jon\'s
Ghost, below. Bran still travels with his pup Summer, but since he\'s not in Season 5, don\'t expect to see them around for a while.
Though the Lannisters might be the villains of "Game of Thrones," it\'s the White Walkers that are the real threat. Little is known about these creatures, but they have the ability to reanimate the dead and turn them into soldiers, seem to control ice magic and also are probably building an army out of transformed babies that have been sacrificed to them. Confused? Yeah, so are show watchers.
You won\'t remember the names of half the secondary characters
Feel overwhelmed by all the names thrown at you in this post? Those are only the most need-to-know players. There are plenty of other secondary characters who haven\'t even been touched on, and for the most part all of them are important (except for the ones the show seems to have forgotten about). Below is a guide for when you get confused about whether you\'re looking at Loras or Lancel and are trying to remember who Gendry was and why the Mountain looks different. Enjoy:
