Yes, but as I'm sure most of you know, you don't really need it until you are at an intermediate level. I just got one for 9th grade.

Mine is both lol. It is closed until I have to take the plug thingys out when I want it open.

it'll take a couple of years till i get one. for one it is to expensive. 2. i hear the are very easy to dent and i am very clumzy and i hit it on the stand and drop it so im not getting one till i get ahold of my clumzyness.

My first (and only) flute has open holes. It came with some kind of covers for them, but my teacher took them away in a month or two. At first, it was really hard to play because my fingers kept sliping of the holes. :P I just can't imagine playing with the covers now.

I don't even have a flute :( I'm only playing it for school. But I'm really starting to get interested in it.

The flute is really fun. You don't NEED the open-holed flute until you get to intermediate level though...

I had two flutes. I don't have my first flute anymore, my second flute is my current flute. None of my flutes are open holded flutes.
