How do i hapus messages?

I hapus the messages in my kotak masuk becouse i don't like backlog. But the messages I hapus go into the trash and it's not deleting them, they just stay there and it's getting bigger. Is they a way to hapus the messages compltely atau is there a waiting peroid then there deleted, like hotmail?
