Eric loves Ariel for her personality and what's inside her heart. You could tell he loved her even though he wanted to be with the mystery girl. Then Eric decided to marry the mute girl instead of the mystery girl-until dumb Vanessa showed up. Also, when Ariel revealed her mermaid tail to him, Eric still loved her-otherwise, he wouldn't go out and save her and her family from Ursula. He was also really happy to see her when the two reunited. Sure, Ariel/Eric would have a few fights but they'll kiss and make up.
