These two were naturally brave - Mulan and Shang were brave because they had to be. Mulan had to brave to protect her father and Shang had to be brave as general. Pocahontas didn't need to jump off that cliff and John Smith didn't need to go exploring over raging waterfalls.

Mulan and Shang seem brave because they are in war, not fighting the tradition. At least, only Mulan fights tradition, but no relation with her love.

Pocahontas has to be brave to protect her love and fight for her love. She has to prevent war so she can be with John. John is also brave because he chooses to save his lover's father. He also has to face his Englishmen to protect the Indians.
