Ariel never connected to or related to her father, constantly clashed with him, and he never showed her real respect. However, clearly, Triton adored his daughter and at least showed her sincere kindness and love on several occasions. He would do anything for her.

Gothel harboured no love for Rapunzel and only valued her hair. She may have phonily treated Rapunzel...less abrasively, but she was passive aggressively cruel with every other sentence and she's putting on an act. Gothel would never sacrifice herself for Rapunzel.

Punzie was given everything but her freedom. The only thing Gothel ever refused her was leaving her tower. She basically gave Punzie every other thing her heart desired.

Ariel, to me, was harassed for her interests from day one. Triton demanded that she sing and do concerts, and reprimanded her constantly-- for going to shipwrecks, for exploring the surface, for collecting--- and even in the TV miniseries-- for making friends with outcasts.

Gothel, at least, did not continually disparage Punzie, but only denied her, her physical liberty. Triton denied Ariel the ability to hold her own opinions, make her own choices, and basically punished her all of the time.

Triton only DECIDED to sacrifice himself for his daughter once he found out that he had broken his relationship with her. Gothel may have had "plans to stay young," but she wasn't continually abusive to Punzie, and she didn't make Punzie suspicious of her until the very, very end.

She was continually abusive to Rapunzel. Emotionally and mentally abusive. And gothel didn't allow Rapunzel opinions or to make decisions for herself either

Gothel was emotionally abusive towards her. Yeah she granted her request except leaving the tower, but she constantly persuade her to stay home so she can use her hair for her own and seize her freedom. She never love Rapunzel and never sacrifice for her.

Ariel had her own trouble with her father, but at least her father wants the best for her. He actually loves her and he sacrifice to her.

Really? Triton doesn't really act like he loves his daughter until almost the very end of the movie. He treats Ariel like a doormat. He barks at her, punishes her, and forces his worldview on her.

I don't see Gothel doing that at all. Gothel persuades Rapunzel to stay in the tower, and Punzie defies her. It isn't because Gothel yells, punishes, and destroys things.

I'm actually jealous of Rapunzel's life, Gothel supported Rapunzel's artistic abilities, brought paints so that Punzie could chart the stars, and gave her resources for a plethora of hobbies ( candle-making, dress-making, baking,etc). Triton only wanted Ariel to sing. Triton never supports anything else Ariel does.

Whatever. I don't feel much for Triton until he changes his abusive behavior. And though Gothel is sneaky, she respects Rapunzel enough not to browbeat her into submission. I actually feel like Rapunzel got it easier than I did.

Uh, gothel isn't being supportive. Gothel does everything she does to keep Rapunzel from leaving. She encouraged her painting and activities to keep Rapunzel preoccupied, same with the other hobbies. She was very abusive. She kidnapped her and kept her locked up for 18 years. Im not really sure how you can view someone living in the same room for 18 years with their abusive abducter, who oppressed her every day and who is using them for their own personal gain a better situation than Ariel's.

Gothel treated her like a servant and sent her into the world of fear and depression. She derived pleasure out of seeing Punz almost traumatized and getting sad. All she loved was her hair. While Flynn moves it away in the romantic scenes, Gothel always strokes her hair to remain youthful. Gothel is the most evil villin along with Claude Frollo and Scar. She is like the female Hitler of Disney, always tried to be emotionally abusive an mothers care for their children, she didn't instead sneaking out to Punz and locking her up. She might have bought her paints, but all she wants is that Punzie never guessed her evil intentions and remained isolated from the world. Ariel at least had freedom and plus, Triton didn't have pleasure out of his daughter or murder Eric. Gothel followed Rapunzel even when she was free, only liked her hair, and brainwashed her for 18 years. She then mudered Flynn until Punz saved him and almost made Punzie commit suicide out of fustration

Ariel at least could do most stuff within her land, Triton was too strict and conservative parent. Not like Gothel, who was downright using Rapunzel. Triton in his heart wanted Ariel safe, and that's where their tiffs grew from. Gothel was using Rapunzel to do all her chores, and literally kept her in a "pretty" cage

Also I think Ariel, Merida and Jasmine were quite similar in their sufferings

By far! Triton, despite his many flaws, is a good person and loving parent at his core.

No question, Rapunzel had the worst living conditions. Yes, Triton had anger issues and yelled at Ariel and destroyed her collection (and I'm not saying that wasn't messed up) but being locked up your whole life, being talked down to, manipulated, and even getting yelled at for wanting to go outside is abusive. Gothel may have gotten Rapunzel the paints she wanted but that was to keep her happy and from running away. It was very obvious throughout the movie that Gothel cared more about Rapunzel's hair (kissing only her hair, making sure her hair was okay first after the Stabbington Brothers almost kidnapped Rapunzel, etc)

I believe more people would say Ariel. In my country people would say that Rapunzel had it too good.
