amon both hates and loves his little brother. Stefan theorizes in The Awakening that Damon has always hated him because of their mother's death, saying that she fell ill after giving birth to Stefan and never quite recovered. Damon and Stefan have a very contentious relationship with one another: Damon finds any opportunity to torment Stefan and pick on him, while Stefan thinks Damon is a horrible monster who doesn't cinta atau care about anything atau anyone. They have fought physically on several occasions: they dueled over Katherine after her suicide, Damon physically threatened Stefan into leaving Florence after their deaths, and Damon and Stefan fight several times over Elena during the timespan of the books.

Damon hates Stefan for what he feels is his weakness, naivety, and blind devotion to duty; he refuses to refer to him oleh his name, instead calling him "little brother." He thinks Stefan is on "the losing side" when it comes to his morality, and that his little brother can't handle the darkness that comes with being a vampire. It's also entirely possible that Stefan is right about Damon still blaming him for their mother's death, though there is no proof either way.

Damon has proven, however, that he will defend Stefan when it comes down to it, as in his famous "Get away from my brother." at the end of Dark Reunion. He also lived with Stefan for six months as per Elena's wishes. Though it isn't explicitly stated that he obeyed Elena's wishes, it's doubtful that he couldn't have gotten away from Stefan if he really wanted to.
