Bring Me the Horizon Discuss ‘That’s the Spirit’ + Check Out a BMTH ‘Say It, Play It’ Spotify Playlist
Bring Me the Horizon unleashed their fifth album,
, on Friday, Sept. 11, and it finds the U.K. band exploring a new sound. Gone are vocalist Oli Sykes’ screams from albums past, and present is a more melodic yet aggressive sound that even sprinkles in elements of pop and dance music. However, lyrically the themes remain as dark as ever.
, a critical and commercial success, it would have been a safe bet to continue the sonic vibe of that album, yet BMTH have evolved once again. And if you go back further and compare
with the band’s first three albums, the difference is even more striking.
Bring Me the Horizon took some time to answer a few of our questions in the video interview above, and we asked them if they feared any backlash from their longtime fans as the band introduces a new sound to their audience. In response, Sykes mentioned the band’s keyboardist/programmer Jordan Fish as a key contributor to BMTH’s new musical direction, “Jordan has opened a lot of doors for what we always wanted to do, and we’ve become better musicians. Whether Jordan was in the band or not, it wouldn’t sound like we used to … We squeezed metal for all it’s worth, and if we were going to write another album like Sempiternal, we’d just be treading old ground.”
In the video above, the band also discusses the single “Throne,” as well as the track “Blasphemy,“ the latter of which Sykes says is a condemnation of the evils that can come out of organized religion.
In addition to the video interview, you can also check out the Bring Me the Horizon ‘Say It, Play It’ Spotify player below, featuring songs from
