Like for example: All voice actors have to do is read the script and just their voices to perform the characters they play. Another I learned is bahasa inggris voice actors can't voiced moe
I would say that when doing a voice, it's best to try to sound as much like the Japanese voices as possible, to avoid pissing of dub-haters if nothing else....unless the Japanese voices are also terrible. But it's not the most important thing.
One good way to f**k up a voice is not taking the age, weight, & body shape into consideration when voicing a character. Weight deeply effects one's voice. If anda gain atau lose enough, it will change.
Let's pick on shoddy Japanese voice akting for a moment, even though I rarely watch American dubs....
The Japanese version of Hunter x Hunter chose Ging & Kite's voices very poorly: Ging is a really short medium built guy & layang-layang is anorexic, but they both sound like body builders on steroids.
Then there's the Japanese voice cast for Yu yu Hakusho; Kurama sounds like an 8 tahun old girl. At his age, his voice should be androgynous & even a little scratchy because of puberty, not ultra-feminine. Hiei has a deep manly voice; not appropriate for such a short guy. He should have a deeper voice in his true form when he's lebih muscular.
While the dub for Kodomo no Omocha is very good, Akito's voice is simply too deep & adult for a boy who hasn't hit puberty yet.
If anda want pro advice, I'd suggest contacting some real voice actors via Twitter atau Facebook. I've gotten a few back from LittleKuriboh of Yugioh Abridged. He's changed & evolved a lot as a voice actor over the years & could tell anda what the voice actors on other abridged series are doing wrong.
